MADAYIL CHAMUNDI  മടയിൽ ചാമുണ്ഡി:

പൊതുവാളരുടെ കുലദൈവങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ് മടയില്‍ ചാമുണ്ഡി. മൂന്നു ലോകങ്ങളെയും  വിറപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നവരായിരുന്നു  ചണ്ഡമുണ്ഡന്മാർ. അവരെ വധിച്ചതിനാലാണ് ഈ ദേവി തെയ്യത്തെ ചാമുണ്ഡി  എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്‌.  ദേവാസുര യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ അസുരരെ നിഗ്രഹിക്കാന്‍ ദേവി എടുത്ത അവതാരങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നായ കൌശികി ദേവിയുടെ അംശാവതാരം. ആകാശം മുതല്‍ പാതാളം വരെ ചെന്ന് അസുരന്‍മാരെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ ദേവിയോട് യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ പിടിച്ചു നില്‍ക്കാനാകാതെ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ ചണ്ട മുണ്ടന്‍മാരുടെ കിങ്കരന്‍മാര്‍ മടയില്‍ പോയി ഒളിച്ചുവെന്നും എന്നാല്‍ അപ്പോള്‍ ദേവി വരാഹ രൂപമെടുത്ത് (പന്നിരൂപം) മടയില്‍ ഒളിച്ചിരുന്ന അസുരന്‍മാരെ വധിച്ചു എന്നും അങ്ങിനെയാണ് “മടയില്‍ ചാമുണ്ഡി” എന്ന പേര്‍ വന്നത് എന്നും പറയുന്നു. ഇവരെ പാതാളം വരെ പിന്തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ വധിച്ചതിനാല്‍ “പാതാളമൂര്‍ത്തി” എന്നും പേരുണ്ട്.

വരാഹി സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തിലുള്ള ദേവതയായത് കൊണ്ടാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം പന്നിമുഖം വെച്ച് ആടുന്നത്. തെയ്യക്കോലങ്ങളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും സുന്ദരമായ ആടയാഭരണങ്ങള്‍ അണിയുന്ന ഈ തെയ്യം, തെയ്യമെന്ന അനുഷ്ഠാന കലയുടെ എല്ലാ സൌന്ദര്യവും  നമുക്ക് കാട്ടി തരുന്നു.    അലന്തട്ട മട വാതില്‍ക്കല്‍, കരിമണല്‍ താവളം എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന കാവുകള്‍.

മറ്റൊരു ഐതിഹ്യം ഇതാണ്:

പയ്യാടക്കത്ത് നായരെയും കൂട്ടി ഒരിക്കല്‍ വണ്ണാടില്‍ പൊതുവാള്‍ നായാട്ടിനു പോയത്രേ. വളരെ നേരമായിട്ടും ഒരു മൃഗത്തെയും  കിട്ടാതെയിരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ കുറച്ചകലെയുള്ള മടയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഒരു അനക്കം കേട്ട് പന്നിയാണെന്ന് കരുതി ശബ്ദം കെട്ട  ദിക്കിലേക്ക്  അമ്പെയ്തുവത്രേ.

എന്നാല്‍ ഗുഹയില്‍ നിന്നും കേട്ടത് വലിയൊരു അലര്‍ച്ചയും ചിലമ്പിന്റെ ശബ്ദവും ആയിരുന്നു. അത് കെട്ട ഉടനെ പൊതുവാള്‍ ജീവനും കൊണ്ട് ഓടിയത്രേ. ഓടി വീട്ടുമുറ്റത്ത്‌ എത്തി ആളെ വിളിക്കുന്നതിനു മുമ്പേ തന്നെ പിന്നാലെ എത്തിയ  ഭീകര മൂര്‍ത്തി  പൊതുവാളിനെ ചവിട്ടിക്കൊന്ന് പുറം കാല്  കൊണ്ട് തട്ടിയെറിഞ്ഞു. തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ പന്നിയുടെ മുഖം, കോഴിയെ കൊന്ന്  പുറം കാലു കൊണ്ട്  എറിയുന്നതും നായാട്ടിനെ ഓര്‍മ്മപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ചടങ്ങുകളാണ്.

മടയിൽ ചാമുണ്ടി തെയ്യം

കാളി എന്ന പേര്‍ ചൊല്ലി വിളിക്കുന്ന തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്‌ ഭദ്രകാളി, വീരര്‍ കാളി, കരിങ്കാളി, പുള്ളിക്കാളി, ചുടല ഭദ്ര കാളി, പുലിയൂരുകാളി തുടങ്ങിയവ. ചണ്ടമുണ്ടന്മാരെ വധിക്കുകയും രക്തബീജാസുരന്റെ രക്തം ഭൂമിയില്‍ വീഴാതെ എഴുന്നേറ്റ്  കുടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത കാളി തന്നെയാണ് ‘ചാമുണ്ഡി’. രക്തത്തില്‍ മുഴുകിയതിനാലാണ് ചാമുണ്ഡിയെ ‘രക്ത ചാമുണ്ഡിയെന്നും’ ‘രക്തേശ്വരിയെന്നും’ വിളിക്കുന്നത്‌. ചണ്ട മുണ്ടന്മാരുമായുള്ള യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ കാളി ആകാശ പാതാളങ്ങളില്‍ അവരെ പിന്തുടര്ന്ന് ചെന്ന്  യുദ്ധം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടത്രേ. പാതാളത്തില്‍ പോയത് കൊണ്ടാണത്രേ ‘പാതാളമൂര്ത്തി ’ എന്നും ‘മടയില്‍ ചാമുണ്ഡി’ എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നത്‌.

വണ്ണാടില്‍ തറവാട്ടില്‍ മൂത്തപൊതുവാളും സഹായി കുരുവാടന്‍ നായര്‍ക്കൊപ്പം ഒരിക്കല്‍ നായാട്ടിനായി വനഗമനം  നടത്തുകയായിരുന്നു. കുലച്ചുപിടിച്ച കുറുവില്ലുമായി പൊതുവാളും പിന്നില്‍ കത്തിയുമായി നായരും, വ്യഗ്രതയോടെ  മുന്നോട്ടു നീങ്ങി.  ഒരു നിമിഷം കുറച്ചകലെ കാട്ടാട് ഇറങ്ങിയ ശബ്ദം- വില്ല്കു ലച്ചു തൊടുത്തു. വീണ ഇര ഏതെന്നു അറിയ്യാന്‍ തിടുക്കത്തില്‍ ഉള്‍കാനനത്തിലേക്ക് ഓടി ചെന്നു. ഇരയെ കാണാതെ ഇരുവരും തളര്‍ന്നു ഇരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ വര്‍ദ്ധിടാവേശതോടെ  കാടിളക്കി  അരവമുയര്‍ന്നു. അമ്പേറ്റ മൃഗത്തിന്റെ അലര്‍ച്ച. രണ്ടുപേരും ഭയത്തോടെയും അതിശയത്തോടെയും മുന്നോട്ടേക്ക്, മൂത്തപോതുവാളാണ് ആദ്യം കണ്ടത്.

ഒരു വലിയ മടയ്ക്കു അകത്തു തിളങ്ങുന്ന കണ്ണുകള്‍ പുറത്തേക്ക് തള്ളി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന കൃഷ്ണ വര്‍ണ്ണപീലികള്‍, ഗുഹയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഒരു ഘോര രൂപം പുറത്തിറങ്ങി രണ്ടുപേരും ജീവനും കൊണ്ട് വനത്തിനു വെളിയിലേക് പാഞ്ഞു . അവര്‍ക്ക് പിന്നില്‍ വെളോട്ടുചിലമ്പ് കിലുക്കി, വെള്ളിയരമണികള്‍ അരവമുതിര്‍ന്നു. അട്ടഹാസവും അലര്‍ച്ചയും അവരെ വേട്ടയാടി. പൊതുവാള്‍ ജീവനും കൊണ്ടോടി അഭയം പ്രാപിച്ചത്കാനക്കരയമ്മയുടെ പള്ളിയറയിലെക്കാണ്. കാനക്കരയമ്മ ഇങ്ങനെ  മൊഴിഞ്ഞു “അഭയം  ഞാനേകിയ  മൂത്തപൊതുവാള്‍ എനിക്കരുമയാണ്‌ കലിയടക്കി നീ മടങ്ങുവിന്‍” കലിയടങ്ങാത്ത പാതാളഭൈരവി  നായരെ കൂര്‍ത്ത  നഖത്താല്‍ കുത്തിയെടുത്ത് കുടല്‍ പിളര്‍ന്നു രുധിരം കുടിച്ച് ചിലമ്പിട്ട കാലുകൊണ്ട്‌ ജഡം തട്ടിയെറിഞ്ഞു കലിയടക്കി.

ശാന്തയായ ഭൈരവിയെ പൊതുവാള്‍ അരിയെറിഞ്ഞേതിരേറ്റ് പള്ളിപീഠം നല്‍കി പൂവും  അന്തിതിരിയും  കയ്യേറ്റ്  ഇഷ്ട്ട വരധായിനിയായ  മടയില്‍ ചാമുണ്ടി യായി കുടിയിരുത്തി. ആലന്തട്ട കാട്ടിലെ മടയില്‍ നിന്നാണ് മടയില്‍ ചാമുണ്ടി  ഉദയം  ചെയിതതു കൊണ്ടാണ് ആലന്തട്ട മടവാതില്‍ക്കാവില്‍ ഭഗവതി എന്നും പറയുന്നത്

MADAYIL CHAMUNDI:

Madail Chamundi is one of the family deities of common warriors. The Chandamundas were the ones who shook the three worlds. This Goddess Theiya is called Chamundi because she killed them. An incarnation of Goddess Kaushiki, one of the incarnations taken by the Goddess to subdue the Asuras in the Devasura War. It is said that when the Kingaras of the Chanda Mundans could not resist the goddess who went from the sky to the underworld and started killing the asuras in the battle, they went and hid in the Mada, but then the Goddess took the form of Varaha (pig form) and killed the demons who were hiding in the Mada and that is how the name “Madail Chamundi” came. They are also known as “Patalamurti” as they were chased to the underworld and killed.

This Theyam is carried around with a pig’s face because it is a deity in the Varahi concept. This Theiyam, who wears the most beautiful sheep ornaments among the Theiyakolams, shows us all the beauty of the ritual art of Theiyam. Alanthatta Mada Doorway and Karimanal Tavalam are the main caves of this Theiyam.

Another legend is:

Payadakkat took the Nairs and once went to Vannad for general hunting. When he did not find any animal for a long time, he heard a movement from the nearby paddock and thought it was a pig, and shot an arrow in the direction of the noise.

But what was heard from the cave was a great roar and the sound of chimps. As soon as it was tied, the common sword ran for its life. Before he could run to the backyard and call someone, the terror murti, who came after him, kicked the public sword and knocked it away with his outer leg. The pig’s face of Theiyat, killing a chicken and throwing it with the outer leg are rituals reminiscent of Nayat.

Bhadrakali, Veerar Kali, Karinkali, Pullikali, Chutala Bhadra Kali, Puliurukali, etc., are the names called by the name Kali. ‘Chamundi’ is Kali who killed the Chandamundas and drank the blood of Raktabijasura without falling on the ground. Chamundi is called ‘Rakta Chamundi’ and ‘Rakteshwari’ because she is immersed in blood. In the war with the fools of Chanda, Kali followed them in the heavenly underworld and fought them. He is called ‘Patalamurthy’ and ‘Madail Chamundi’ because he went to the underworld. 

In Vannad, the village headman and his assistant Kuruvadan Nair were once going to the forest for hunting. The Nair, with his common sword in his grip and his knife behind him, advanced eagerly. A moment later, the sound of the wild goat came down – the bow was drawn. Hastily ran to the ulkananam to find out what the fallen victim was. When both of them were exhausted without seeing the victim, they became wild with increasing excitement. The roar of the arrowed beast. Both of them stepped forward in fear and amazement, and the elder bison was the first to see it.

Krishna Varnapilis, whose shining eyes were protruding from inside a large fold, a monstrous figure came out of the cave and both of them rushed out of the forest with their lives. Behind them, the bells fluttered and the silver bells rang. Laughter and shouting followed them. Phuduwal took refuge with his life in the church of Kanakakarayamma. Kanakarayamma said like this, “Abhayam nikkea moothopatuwal nikiruma ani kaliataki, you return” Patalabhairavi, who was not kaliataki, stabbed the dog with a sharp nail, split its intestines, drank the blood, kicked the flesh with its clawed foot and killed it.

Peaceful Bhairavi was cut off by the public and given a pew, flowers and flowers in hand, and settled as Chamundi in Madail, the desired bride. Bhagavati is also called Alanthatta Madavatilkavil because Chamundi rose from Mada in Alanthatta forest.
