NAGARAJAV നാഗരാജന്‍

നാഗാരാധനയുടെ ഭാഗമായുള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്‌ നാഗകന്നി,  നാഗരാജന്‍, നാഗത്താന്‍,  നാഗപ്പോതി മുതലായവ.  മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ കാവുകളിലും സര്‍പ്പക്കാവുകള്‍ ഉള്ളതായി കാണാന്‍ കഴിയും. കയ്യത്ത് നാഗം,  മുയ്യത്ത് നാഗം,  ഏറുമ്പാല നാഗം, കരിപ്പാല്‍ നാഗം, എടാട്ട് നാഗം എന്നീ പ്രസിദ്ധങ്ങളായ നാഗ  സങ്കേതങ്ങളിലും  ചില ഗൃഹങ്ങളിലുമാണ്  നാഗ ദേവതകളെ കെട്ടിയാടിക്കുന്നത്. പാല്ക്കടലിന്റെ നടുവിലുള്ള വെള്ളിമാന്‍ കല്ലിന്റെ അരികിലുള്ള  മണിനാഗ മണിപ്പവിഴത്തിന്റെ സമീപത്തെ മണിനാഗപ്പുറ്റില്‍ നിന്നാണത്രെ ഈ ദേവതമാര്‍ ഉണ്ടായത്.

നാഗകണ്ടനെയും നാഗ കന്നിയെയും കെട്ടുന്നത് വണ്ണാന്‍മാരാണെങ്കില്‍ പാണന്‍മാരും മുന്നൂറ്റാന്‍മാരും കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന നാഗ  ദേവതകളാണ് നാഗക്കാളിയും നാഗഭഗവതിയും. ഇത് കൂടാതെ രാമവില്യം കഴകത്തില്‍ ‘നാഗത്തിന്‍ ദൈവം’ എന്നൊരു നാഗ ദേവതയെ വണ്ണാന്‍മാര്‍ കെട്ടിവരുന്നു. കുറുന്തിനി പാട്ടിനു കെട്ടിയാടാറുള്ള  കുറുന്തിരി ഭഗവതിയും  കുറുന്തിനിക്കാമനും (നാഗക്കാമന്‍) നാഗ ദേവതകളാണ്. തെയ്യം നടക്കുന്ന ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ സര്‍പ്പബലിയും നടക്കും. സന്താന വരദായിനിയും രോഗ വിനാശിനിയുമാണത്രേ ഈ നാഗ ദേവതകള്‍.

തെയ്യങ്ങളുടെ ചമയങ്ങളില്‍ നാഗരൂപങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നല്ല പ്രാധാന്യം ഉണ്ട്. നാഗപ്പോതിയുടെ മുടിക്ക് തന്നെ പേര് നാഗമുടി എന്നാണു. മറ്റ് തെയ്യങ്ങളുടെ പല ആഭരണങ്ങളിലും നാഗ രൂപാലങ്കാരങ്ങള്‍ കാണാം. കുരുത്തോടികളിലും  മുഖപ്പാളികളിലും  നാഗങ്ങളെ വരച്ചു വയ്ക്കുന്ന പതിവുണ്ട്. നാഗം താത്തെഴുത്ത് എന്ന പേരില്‍ ഒരു മുഖത്തെഴുത്ത് തന്നെയുണ്ടത്രേ.

Nagakanni, Nagarajan, Nagathan, Nagapothi, etc. are the famous Theiyams that are part of Naga worship. It can be seen that almost all cavies have serpentine claws. Naga deities are enshrined in famous Naga sanctuaries and some houses like Kayyat Nagam, Muiyat Nagam, Erumbala Nagam, Karipal Nagam and Etat Nagam. These deities originated from Maninagaput near the Maninaga Manipavizham near the Velliman stone in the middle of the Lake of Milk.

While Nagakandan and Naga Kanni are tied by Vannans, Nagakali and Nagabhagavati are Naga deities who are tied by Panans and Munnutans. Apart from this, the Vannans have built a Naga deity called ‘Snake God’ in Ramavilyam Kazhakam. Kurunthiri Bhagavathy and Kurunthinikaman (Nagakaman) are the Naga deities who sway to Kurunthini song. Serpabali will also be performed on the days of Theyam. These naga deities are the guardians of children and destroyers of diseases.

Naga forms have great significance in the decoration of the Theiyas. The hair of Nagapothi itself is called Nagamudi. Naga motifs are found in many ornaments of other Theiyas. There is a custom of drawing nagas on the kuruthodis and faceplates. There is a face writing called Nagam Thathezhuth.
