മരണാനന്തരം മനുഷ്യര്‍ ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ദൈവമായി മാറുമെന്ന വിശ്വാസം കാരണം പൂര്‍വികാരാധന, പരേതാരാധന, വീരാരാധന എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് പ്രാമുഖ്യം നല്‍കി അത്തരം തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന പതിവുണ്ട്. കതിവന്നൂര്‍ വീരന്‍, കുടിവീരന്‍, പടവീരന്‍, കരിന്തിരി നായര്‍, മുരിക്കഞ്ചേരി കേളു, തച്ചോളി ഒതേനന്‍, പയ്യമ്പള്ളി ചന്തു തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ വീര പരാക്രമ സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തിലുള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്.

പരേതരായ വീര വനിതകളും തെയ്യമായി മാറിയതാണ് മാക്കഭഗവതി (മാക്കപോതി), മനയില്‍ ഭഗവതി, തോട്ടുംകര ഭഗവതി, മുച്ചിലോട്ട് ഭഗവതി, വണ്ണാത്തി ഭഗവതി, കാപ്പാളത്തി ചാമുണ്ഡി, മാണിക്കഭഗവതി എന്നിവര്‍ ഇത്തരം തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്.
മന്ത്രവാദത്തിലും വൈദ്യത്തിലും മുഴുകിയവരുടെ പേരിലുള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ് കുരിക്കള്‍ തെയ്യം, പൊന്ന്വന്‍ തൊണ്ടച്ചന്‍, വിഷകണ്ടന്‍ എന്നീ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍.
ദൈവ ഭക്തനും കോമരങ്ങളുമായിരുന്നവരുടെ പേരിലുള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ് മുന്നായീശ്വരന്‍, വാലന്തായിക്കണ്ണന്‍ എന്നീ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍.
ദുര്‍മൃതിയടഞ്ഞ മനുഷ്യരുടെ പേരിലുള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ് കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്‍, പെരുമ്പുഴയച്ചന്‍ തെയ്യം, പൊന്‍മലക്കാരന്‍, കമ്മാരന്‍ തെയ്യം, പെരിയാട്ട് കണ്ടന്‍, മല വീരന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍. പാമ്പ് കടിയേറ്റ് തീയില്‍ വീണ് മരിച്ച കേളനെ വയനാട്ടുകുലവന്‍ ആണ് ദൈവക്കരുവാക്കി മാറ്റിയത്. കിഴക്കന്‍ പെരുമാളുടെ കോപം കൊണ്ട് പെരിയ പിഴച്ചു പെരുമ്പുഴയില്‍ വീണു മരിച്ച ഒരാളുടെ സങ്കല്പ്പിച്ചുള്ള തെയ്യമാണ്‌ പെരുമ്പുഴയച്ചന്‍ തെയ്യം. തൂപ്പൊടിച്ചു നായാട്ടിനും നഞ്ചിട്ടു നായാട്ടിനും പോയി മടങ്ങി വരാതിരുന്ന രണ്ടു കാരണവന്‍മാരെ പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ് പൊന്‍മലക്കാരന്‍ തെയ്യവും, കമ്മാരന്‍ തെയ്യവും. ഐതിഹ്യ പ്രകാരം ഭദ്രകാളിയാല്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട ചിണ്ടനെ മലവീരന്‍ തെയ്യമായി കെട്ടിയാടിക്കുന്നു. പുതിയ ഭഗവതിയാല്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടുവെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്ന ‘ചാത്തിര’നാണ് ‘പാടാര്‍ കുളങ്ങര വീരന്‍’ എന്ന തെയ്യമായത്. മണത്തണ ഭാഗവതിയാല്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടുവെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരാളുടെ പേരിലുള്ള തെയ്യമാണ്‌ ‘ഉതിരപാലന്‍’ തെയ്യം.
Ghosts:
Such superstitions tend to favor ancestor worship, ghost worship, and hero worship because of the belief that humans sometimes become gods after death.
Kativannur Veeran, Kudiveeran, Pataveeran, Karinthiri Nair, Murikancheri Kelu, Thacholi Othenan, Payyampally Chanthu etc. are themes in the concept of heroism.

Late heroic women also became theyas. Makabhagavathy (Makapothi), Manail Bhagavathy, Thotumkara Bhagavathy, Muchilot Bhagavathy, Vannathi Bhagavathy, Kapalathi Chamundi and Manikabhagavathy are such theyas.
Kurikkal Theiyam, Ponavan Thondachan and Vishakandan are the theiyams named after those who indulged in magic and medicine.
Munnayeswaran and Valanthaikannan are the names of those who were devotees of God.
Theiyams like Kandanar Kelan, Perumpuzhayachan Theiyam, Ponmalakaran, Kammaran Theiyam, Periyat Kandan and Mala Veeran are theiyams named after the dead people.
Kelan, who was bitten by a snake and fell into the fire, was turned into a god by Wayanatukulavan. Perumpuzhayachan Theiyam is a Theiyam of a person who fell in Perumuzha and died due to the anger of the Eastern Perumals. Ponmalakaran Theiyam and Kammaran Theiyam represent the two karanavans who went hunting and hunting and did not return. According to the legend, Malaveera tied up Chindan who was killed by Bhadrakali. 'Chathira', who is said to have been killed by the new Bhagavati, is the origin of 'Padar Kulangara Veeran'. 'Uthirapalan' is a theyam named after a person who is said to have been killed by Manathana Bhagavathy.
