Theyyacharithram
രോഗ ദേവതകള്‍ : പുരാതന കാലത്ത് രോഗങ്ങള്‍ ദൈവ കോപം മൂലമുള്ളതാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്നു. അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ രോഗം വിതയ്ക്കുന്ന ദൈവങ്ങളെയും രോഗശമനം വരുത്തുന്ന ദൈവങ്ങളെയും അവര്‍ കെട്ടിയാടിയിരുന്നു. രോഗം വിതയ്ക്കുന്നവരാണ് ചീറുമ്പമാര്‍ (മൂത്ത ഭഗവതിയും ഇളയ ഭഗവതിയും). പരമേശ്വരന്റെ നേത്രത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് പൊട്ടിമുളച്ചവരാണത്രേ ഇവര്‍. ചീറുമ്പ മൂത്തവളും ഇളയവളും ആദ്യം വസൂരി രോഗം വിതച്ചത് തമ്മപ്പന് (ശിവന്) തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. ആയിരമായിരം കോഴിത്തലയും ആനത്തലയും കൊത്തി രക്തം കുടിച്ചിട്ടും ദാഹം തീരാത്ത മൂര്‍ത്തികളെ ശിവന് ഭൂമിയിലേക്കയച്ചു. ചീറുമ്പക്ക് കെട്ടികോലമില്ല. കാവിന്‍മുറ്റത്ത് കളം വരച്ചു പാട്ടുത്സവം നടത്തുകയാണ് പതിവ്.
ഇവരെ കൂടാതെ രോഗം വിതക്കുന്ന ദേവതയാണ് വസൂരിമാല.
Gods of Disease :
In ancient times, diseases were believed to be caused by God's anger. Because of that, they tied up the gods who spread disease and the gods who heal diseases. Chirumbas (Elder Bhagavathy and Younger Bhagavathy) are the spreaders of disease. These are the ones who sprouted from the eyes of the Supreme Lord. It was Thammappan (Shiva) who first sowed smallpox to Cheerumba the elder and the younger. Shiva carved a thousand chicken and elephant heads and sent the murtis to earth who could not quench their thirst even after drinking their blood. Spinach is not tied. It is customary to draw kalam in Kavinmuttam and hold a song festival.
Apart from them, smallpox is the goddess of disease.
