മൃഗ ദേവതകള്‍:
മൃഗ ദൈവങ്ങളില്‍ പുലി ദൈവങ്ങള്‍ക്കാണ് പ്രാമുഖ്യം. പാര്‍വതീ പരമേശ്വരന്‍മാരുടെയും അവരുടെ സന്തതികളുടെയും സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തിലുള്ളതാണ് ഈ പുലി തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍. പുലിക്കണ്ടന്‍ തെയ്യം ശിവനും, പുള്ളികരിങ്കാളി പാര്‍വതിയുമാണ്. (പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളി പുള്ളികരിങ്കാളിയുടെ മകള്‍ ആണെന്നാണ്‌ പരക്കെ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ പാര്‍വതിയുടെ മകളായതു കൊണ്ട് ചിലര്‍ ഈ തെയ്യത്തെ പാര്‍വതിയായും കണക്കാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്). യഥാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ പുലിക്കണ്ടനും പുള്ളികരിങ്കാളിക്കും (ശിവനും പാര്‍വതിക്കും) ഉണ്ടായ മക്കളാണ് ഐവര്‍ പുലിതെയ്യങ്ങള്‍.
കണ്ടപ്പുലി, മാരപ്പുലി, പുലിമാരുതന്‍, കാളപ്പുലി, പുലിയൂരുകണ്ണന്‍ എന്നീ ഐവര്‍ പുലിക്കിടാങ്ങളായ ദേവതകള്‍ അവരുടെ സന്തതികളാണ്. പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളി ഏക പെണ്‍പുലിയായ മകളും. ഇവിടെ അഞ്ചു ആണ്‍ പുലി തെയ്യങ്ങളും ഒരു പെണ്‍പുലി തെയ്യവുമാണ് ഉള്ളത്. (എന്നാല്‍ ഇത് ശരിയല്ലെന്നും ഇതില്‍ നാല് പേര്‍ ആണ്‍ പുലി തെയ്യങ്ങളും പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളി പെണ്‍പുലി തെയ്യവുമാണ് എന്നാണു പരക്കെയുള്ള വിശ്വാസം അങ്ങിനെയാണ് ഐവര്‍ പുലി തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ എന്ന് ഇവര്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്). ഈ പുലിദൈവങ്ങളോടോപ്പം കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന തെയ്യമാണ്‌ കരിന്തിരി നായര്‍.
ഹനുമാന്‍ സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തില്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന തെയ്യമാണ്‌ ബപ്പിരിയന്‍ അഥവാ ബപ്പൂരാന്‍. മാവിലര്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന വരാഹ സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തിലുള്ള തെയ്യമാണ്‌ മനിപ്പനതെയ്യം. പഞ്ചുരുളിയും ഇതേ വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ പെടുന്നു. ഉറഞ്ഞാട്ടത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തില്‍ പന്നിമുഖം വെച്ച് ആടുന്ന തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്‌ ചാമുണ്ഡി തെയ്യങ്ങളായ മടയില്‍ ചാമുണ്ഡി, കുണ്ടോറ ചാമുണ്ഡി, കരിമണല്‍ ചാമുണ്ഡി, ചാമുണ്ഡി (വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തി) എന്നിവയൊക്കെ.
Animal Deities:
Among the animal gods, tiger gods are prominent.
These Puli Theiyams are in the imagination of Goddess Parvati and her progeny. Pulikandan Theyam is Shiva and Pulikarankali is Parvati. (Puliyur Kali is widely known to be the daughter of Pulikarinkali. But some consider this Theiya as Parvati as she is the daughter of Parvati). The Ivar Puliteyams are actually the sons of Pulikandan and Pullikaringali (Shiva and Parvati).
The four tiger cub deities Kandapuli, Marapuli, Pulimaruthan, Kalapuli and Puliyurukannan are their progeny. Puliyur Kali is the only female tiger daughter. There are five male tiger cubs and one female tiger cub. (But it is widely believed that this is not true and four of them are male tigers and Puliyur Kali female tigers hence they are known as Ivar tigers). Karinthiri Nair is the Theiya who hangs out with these tiger gods.
Bapiriyan or Bapuraan is the Theyam which is tied to the concept of Hanuman. Manipanateyam is the theyam in the Varaha concept, which is woven by mavilers. Panchuruli also belongs to the same category. Chamundi Theiyams such as Madail Chamundi, Kundora Chamundi, Karimanal Chamundi and Chamundi (Vishnumurthy) are theyas that swing with a pig's face during a stage of rutting.
