അരച്ചമയങ്ങള്‍:
തളിരോല കൊണ്ടുള്ള അരയൊട, മുളങ്കമ്പുംചുകപ്പു തുണിയും കൊണ്ടുള്ള ദീര്‍ഘ ചതുരാകൃതിയിലുള്ള വിതാനത്തറ, കഞ്ഞിപ്പശ തേച്ചുണക്കി താഴത്തെയറ്റം വര്‍ണ്ണാഭമാക്കിയ വെളുപ്പമ്പന്‍, ചുകപ്പ് തുണി മടക്കിയ വിശറി പോലെ ഞോറിഞ്ഞു വെള്ളിയലുക്ക് തുന്നിയ ചിറകുടുപ്പ് തുടങ്ങിയ ഏഴിലേറെ അരച്ചമയമുണ്ടെന്നാണ് കണക്കത്രേ. കാണിമുണ്ട്, നേര്‍മ്പന്‍, ഒലി എന്നിവയും തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ അരച്ചമയങ്ങളാണ്. ‘ചിറകുടുപ്പ്’ എന്ന അരച്ചമയം പൂക്കട്ടിമുടി വെക്കുന്ന തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കെല്ലാം വേണ്ടതാണ്.
വസ്ത്രാലങ്കാരങ്ങളില്‍ ‘വെളുമ്പന്‍’ എന്ന വസ്ത്രാലങ്കാരം ഉള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്‌ രക്ത ചാമുണ്ഡി, രക്തേശ്വരി, പുലിയൂര് കാളി, കരിങ്കാളി, പുതിയ ഭഗവതി എന്നിവ. ‘കാണി മുണ്ട്’ ഉടുക്കുന്ന തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്‌ വള്ളക്കരിവേടനും, പുലയരുടെ ഭൈരവനും. കമ്പുകളും പല നിറത്തിലുള്ള പട്ടുകളും തുന്നിയുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ‘വിതാനത്തറ’യെന്ന അരച്ചമയം നാഗകന്നി, ക്ഷേത്രപാലകന്‍, മുച്ചിലോട്ട് ഭഗവതി, കണ്ണങ്ങാട്ട് ഭഗവതി, പടക്കെത്തി ഭഗവതി, തായിപ്പരദേവത എന്നിവര്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
കുരുത്തോല കൊണ്ടുള്ള ഉടുപ്പും ഉടയും ചേര്‍ന്ന ഒലിയുടുപ്പുള്ള തെയ്യങ്ങളാണ്‌ പൊട്ടന്‍ തെയ്യവും ഗുളികനും. ഇത് പോലെ ചില ചാമുണ്ഡിമാര്‍ക്കും ഒലിയുടുപ്പു കാണും. വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തിക്ക് വലിയ ഉട കുരുത്തോലകൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാകും. ചില പുരുഷ ദേവതകള്‍ക്ക് ‘വട്ടോട’കളാണ് ഉള്ളത്. ‘അടുക്കും കണ്ണി വളയന്‍’, ‘ചെണ്ടരയില്‍ ക്കെട്ട്’ എന്നൊക്കെയാണ് ഇത് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ചില തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒട്ടിയാണം, കൊയ്തം, മത്താമ്മലാടി, പടിയരഞ്ഞാണം തുടങ്ങിയവ അരച്ചമയങ്ങളായി ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വരാറുണ്ട്.
മുടി: തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ തലച്ചമയങ്ങളില്‍ മുഖ്യമായത് മുടിയാണ്. ദേവന്മാരുടെ കിരീടത്തിനു തുല്യമായി ഇതിനെ കാണുന്നു. തെയ്യം തുടങ്ങുന്നതിനെ മുടിയേറ്റുക എന്നും പറയും. മുടി കുരുത്തോല കൊണ്ട് അലങ്കരിച്ചതോ തുണി കൊണ്ട് അലങ്കരിച്ചതോ ആണ് പതിവ്. മുരിക്ക്, കുമിഴ് തുടങ്ങിയ കനം കുറഞ്ഞ മരങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ടാണ് മിക്ക മുറികളും ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്‌. കവുങ്ങിന്റെ അലക്, ഓട മുള, തകിടുകള്‍, പല നിറത്തിലുള്ള പട്ടു തുണികള്‍, വെള്ളി കൊണ്ടോ ഓടു കൊണ്ടോ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച ചെറു മിന്നികളും ചന്ദ്രക്കലകളും, മയില്‍‌പ്പീലി, ചെക്കിപ്പൂവ്, കുരുത്തോല, കവുങ്ങിന്‍ പാള തുടങ്ങിയവ മുടി ഉണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കും.
തലച്ചമയങ്ങളില്‍ പെട്ടവയാണ് കുപ്പി, തലപ്പാളി, ചെന്നിമലര്‍, ചെന്നിപ്പത്തി, ചെയ്യാക്ക്, കൊമ്പോലക്കാത്, കൊടുവട്ടം, തെക്കന്‍കാത്, ചെണ്ടടത്താങ്ങി എന്നിവ. താഴെ കൊടുത്തതാണ് പൊതുവേയുള്ള മുടികള്‍. എന്നാല്‍ മുപ്പതോളം തിരുമുടികള്‍ ഉണ്ടത്രേ.
കൊടുമുടി, പൌമ്മുടി, കിരീട മുടി, കൊയ്യോല, നീളമുടി, പച്ചില മുടി, പാള മുടി, ചവരി മുടി, വട്ടമുടി, പീലിമുടി, തിരുമുടി, ചട്ടമുടി, കൊണ്ടല്‍മുടി, കൊടുമുടി, കൂമ്പുമുടി, പൊതച്ച മുടി, കൊതച്ചമുടി, ഓങ്കാരമുടി, തൊപ്പിച്ചമയം, ഓലമുടി, ഇലമുടി, പൂക്കട്ടിമുടി ഇങ്ങിനെ പോകുന്നു തിരുമുടികള്‍. മയില്‍‌പ്പീലി തണ്ടുകളാല്‍ സമൃദ്ധമായി അലങ്കരിച്ച പീലിമുടി ഊര്‍പ്പഴശ്ശിയും വേട്ടയ്ക്കൊരു മകനും കന്നിക്കൊരു മകനും, തെക്കന്‍ കരിയാത്തനും ധരിക്കുന്ന തിരുമുടിയാണ്. ഓങ്കാര മുടി ഭൈരവന്‍, മുന്നായീശ്വരന്‍ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കും പാളമുടി കമ്മാടത്ത് ഭഗവതിക്കുമാണ്.
ഗൃഹപ്രവേശനത്തോടോപ്പം മുറ്റത്ത് കെട്ടിയാടിച്ച മുത്തപ്പന്‍ വെള്ളാട്ടത്തിന്റെ ‘കൊടുമുടി ത്തണ്ട’ ദൈവ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യ പ്രതീകമായി വീട്ടിന്റെ കോലായ് മൂലയില്‍ സൂക്ഷിക്കുക പതിവാണ്. കൊരങ്ങിരുത്തം രൂപത്തില്‍ വൈക്കോല്‍ മെടഞ്ഞുണ്ടാക്കിയ അടിസ്ഥാന രൂപത്തില്‍ തുമ്പക്കഴുത്തും തുളസിയും കോളാമ്പിപൂക്കളും അലങ്കരിച്ചുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന കൊടുമുടിയാണ് മുത്തപ്പന്റെത്. പുരുളിമല മുത്തപ്പനായ തിരുവപ്പനതെയ്യം അണിയുന്ന മുടിക്ക് പൌമ്മുടി എന്നാണ് പേര്. നടുവില്‍ ചന്ദ്രക്കലാലംകൃതമായ കൂമ്പും ഇരുഭാഗത്തെയും കോണുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് താഴോട്ട് ചുളുക്കുകളോടെ മുരിക്ക് പലകയില്‍ അരിഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് തകിട് ചേര്‍ത്ത് ഭംഗിയാക്കിയ തിരുമുടിയാണിത്‌.
മുളഞ്ചീളുകള്‍ കൊണ്ടും കമുകിന്റെ ചീന്തിയെടുത്ത വാരികള്‍ കൊണ്ടും പ്രത്യേക രീതിയില്‍ കെട്ടിയുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന വലിയ മുടി പോര്‍ക്കലി ഭഗവതി, മുളവന്നൂര്‍ ഭഗവതി, പുന്നക്കാല്‍ ഭഗവതി, അഷ്ടമച്ചാല്‍ ഭഗവതി പടക്കെത്തി ഭഗവതി, തായിപ്പരദേവത തുടങ്ങി അറുപതിലേറെ വരുന്ന കാളിയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട തെയ്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം അണിയുന്നു. അടിയില്‍ നിന്ന് മുകളിലേക്ക് പോകുന്തോറും വീതി കുറഞ്ഞു കുറഞ്ഞു മുകളറ്റം മൂന്ന്‍ വിരല്‍ വീതി വരത്തക്കവണ്ണം ഇതിന്റെ നിര്‍മ്മിതി. ചുവപ്പ് പട്ടു കൊണ്ടും ചുവപ്പും കറുപ്പും ഇട കലര്‍ത്തി തുന്നിയും അകം പൊള്ളയായ ഒരു സൃഷ്ടിയാണ് വലിയ മുടി.
അമ്മദേവതമാരുടെ മറ്റൊരു തിരുമുടിയാണ് വട്ടമുടി. കുരുത്തോല കമനീയമായി അരിഞ്ഞോരുക്കി മുന്നിലേക്ക് മുഴച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന വിധത്തിലാണ് വട്ടമുടിയൊരുക്കുന്നത്. ഈ ആകൃതിയില്‍ വട്ടപ്പത്തി, പര്‍വാല് എന്നിവ ചേര്‍ത്തും പൂക്കള്‍, മയില്‍‌പ്പീലി മുതലായവ തുന്നിച്ചേര്‍ത്തും വട്ടമുടിക്ക് പേര് മാറ്റം വരുത്താര്‍ ഉണ്ടത്രേ. മുച്ചിലോട്ട് ഭഗവതി, പാടാര്‍കുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതി, നരമ്പില്‍ ഭഗവതി, കക്കര ഭഗവതി, പുതിയ ഭഗവതി, കാനക്കര ഭഗവതി, അങ്കക്കുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതി, കണ്ണങ്ങാട്ട് ഭഗവതി, പുലിമാരുതന്‍, പുലിയൂര് കാളി, കരുവാള് തുടങ്ങി അന്‍പതിലേറെ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ വട്ടമുടി അണിയുന്നവരാണ്.
വീര കഥാ നായകരായ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ അണിയുന്നത് പൂക്കട്ടി മുടിയാണ്. കതിവന്നൂര്‍ വീരന്‍, കന്നിക്കൊരുമകന്‍, കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്‍,പടവീരന്‍, കുരിക്കള്‍ തെയ്യം, തുളു വീരന്‍, മാണിച്ചേരി ദൈവം, വെള്ളൂര്‍ കുരിക്കള്‍, കാരികുരിക്കള്‍, പയമ്പള്ളി ചന്തു തുടങ്ങിയവ ഉദാഹരണം. പിന്നിലെ കുപ്പിയില്‍ ചിറകു പോലെ വിടര്‍ന്ന്‍ മുകളില്‍ കുമ്പിച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന പൂക്കട്ടിയില്‍ അരികു ചേര്‍ന്ന് ചെക്കിപ്പൂക്കള്‍ തുന്നിചേര്‍ത്തിട്ടുണ്ടാകും.
മുത്തപ്പന്റെ മാതാവെന്ന സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തിലുള്ള മൂലംപെറ്റ ഭഗവതിക്ക് വാഴപ്പച്ചില കൊണ്ടുള്ള പച്ചില മുടിയാണ് എങ്കില്‍ മടയില്‍ ചാമുണ്ഡി, രക്ത ചാമുണ്ഡി, മൂവാളം കുഴി ചാമുണ്ഡി, രക്ത്വേശരി, ആര്യക്കരചാമുണ്ഡി, നീലങ്കയ് ചാമുണ്ഡി, പഞ്ചുരുളി, തുടങ്ങിയ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പുറത്തട്ടാണ് മുടി. കുരുത്തോലയുടെ മടല്‍ ചെറുവിരല്‍ വണ്ണത്തില്‍ വൃത്താകൃതിയില്‍ ചെത്തിയുരുട്ടി യതില്‍ നിന്നും മൂന്നു വടികള്‍ നീളത്തിലും രണ്ടെണ്ണം കുറുകെയും കെട്ടി അതിന്മേല്‍ തളിരോല മുറിച്ചോരുക്കി തുന്നിചേര്‍ത്ത് വൃത്തകാരത്തില്‍ വാതിരയും, കുപ്പിദ്ദളവും ചന്ദ്രക്കലയും അരികിലെ മയില്‍ പ്പീലിത്തഴയും ചേര്‍ന്ന് ലക്ഷണമൊത്തൊരു കലാസൃഷ്ടിയായി ഇത് മാറുന്നു.
പുലിക്കണ്ടന്‍, പുലിയൂര് കണ്ണന്‍, പുലിയൂര് കാളി, കണ്ടപ്പുലി, പുലിമാരുതന്‍, കാളപ്പുലി, തുടങ്ങിയ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെറിയ വൃത്താകാരത്തിലുള്ള ചട്ട മുടിയാണ് ധരിക്കുന്നത്. വെള്ളിക്കൊണ്ടുള്ള നാഗഫണവും അനേകം വെള്ളിചന്ദ്രക്കലകളും തുന്നി ചേര്‍ത്ത അരികുകളില്‍ കുരുത്തോല മുറിച്ചു ചേര്‍ത്ത ചെറു മുടിയാണ് ചട്ടമുടി.
വയനാട്ടു കുലവന്‍, പെരുമ്പുഴയച്ചന്‍, പാലാട്ട് ദൈവം എന്നിവര്‍ക്ക് കൊതച്ച മുടിയാണ്. വൈരജാതന്‍, പൂമാരുതന്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ക്ക് പൊതച്ച മുടിയാണ്.

Kanimund, Nermpan and Oli are also the Arachamayas of Theiyat. A 'Chirakudup' is a must have for all those who wear flowery hair.
Rakta Chamundi, Rakteshwari, Puliyur Kali, Karinkali and New Bhagavathy are the Theyas with 'Velumban' costume design.
Vallakarivedan and Bhairavan of Pulayas are the Theiyams who wear 'Kani Mund'. The weaver called 'Vithanathara', who sews cords and multi-colored silks, is used by Nagakanni, temple guardian, Muchilot Bhagavathy, Kannangat Bhagavathy, Patakethi Bhagavathy and Taiparadevata.
Potan Theiyam and Gulikana are oil-dressed Theiyams made of Kuruthola Udu and Uda. Like this, some Chamundis will also see Oliudupu. Vishnumurthy has a large Uda Kuruthola. Some male deities have 'vatotas'. It is also known as 'Adukum Kanni Valayan' and 'Chendraail Kattu'. Some Theiyams are used as Otianam, Koitam, Matthammaladi, Patiaranjanam etc.
Hair: Hair is the most important part of the headdress of the Theyat. It is seen as equivalent to the crown of the gods. The beginning of Theyam is also called hair loss. The hair is usually decorated with kuruthola or decorated with cloth. Most of the rooms are made of thin woods such as murick and kumir. Kaungin alak, oda bamboo, plates, silk cloths of many colors, small minni and crescent moons made of silver or oda, peacock feathers, check flowers, kuruthola, kaungin pala etc. are used to make hair.
Among the talachamayas are kupi, thalapali, chennimalar, chennipatti, kiryak, kompolakath, koduvattam, southankath and chendadathangi. Following are the common hairstyles. But there are about thirty hairs.

It is customary to keep a kolai in the corner of the house as a symbol of God's presence. Muthappan's is a peak decorated with thumpakushtu, tulsi and kolampi flowers in the form of a korangirutham. Paummudi is the name given to the hair worn by Thiruvappanatheyam, the Purulimala Muttappa. This tirumudri is decorated with a crescent-shaped hump in the middle and creases downwards from the corners on both sides.
Porkali Bhagavathy, Mulavannur Bhagavathy, Punnakkal Bhagavathy, Ashtamachal Bhagavathy Patakethi Bhagavathy, Taiparadevata and more than 60 Theyas associated with Kali wear the big hair tied in a special way with bamboo shoots and shredded ribs of kamuk. Vattamudi is another hair style of mother goddesses. Round hair is prepared in such a way that the kuruthola is finely chopped and it stands out in front. There are people who change the name of Vattamudi by adding Vattapati, Parwal and stitching flowers, peacock feathers etc. in this shape. Muchilot Bhagavathy, Patarkulangara Bhagavathy, Narambil Bhagavathy, Kakara Bhagavathy, Puthiya Bhagavathy, Kanakkara Bhagavathy, Ankakulangara Bhagavathy, Kannangat Bhagavathy, Pulimaruthan, Puliyur Kali, Karuval and more than fifty Theiyas wear round hair.
Theyams, the heroes of Veera Katha, wear flowery hair. Kativannur Veeran, Kannikorumakan, Kandanar Kelan, Pataveeran, Kurikkal Theyam, Tulu Veeran, Manicherry Godu, Vellur Kurikkal, Karikurikkal, Payampalli Chanthu etc. On the back of the bottle, checkered flowers are stitched side by side on the flower stem that is spread out like wings and bows above.
