There are divergent opinion existing about the origin of Sri Muchilott Bagavathi who is omnipotent, omniscience and omnipresence. Yet most of the scholars are of the openion that she was to a Brahmin virgin belonging to Perinjaloor mana(maniyot mana) near Taliparamba. The days after fixing the matrimony of the Brahmin virgin, renowned for her unfathomable Vedic knowledge, immeasurable beauty and politeness of behaviour. A known vedic scholar and his desciples challenge the ruler of the area to a debate on Veda sasthra. The ruler being afraid to encounter the bidders sought the help of the Brahmin virgin to argue on his behalf. She made them eat the mud by her amazing and logical arguments. The frenzeed Brahmins brooded scheme to cheat her. They asked ‘which is the most painful pain’ and ‘what is most rapturous state’. ‘Labour pain and erotism’, she answered very innocently.

They distorted the answer stating a person having no such mundane experience can never give such answers and so she is not virgin. So they decide to excommunicate her from the society. The virgin being struck by the arrows of conceptions of the Brahmins ,move towards the abodes of Payyanur Perumal, Karivellur Appan, Rayaramangalath Bagavathi and decided to immolate herself. As she was setting her pyre, a Vaniya Karanavar reached there. On her request to pour oil to the pyre he did it.Thus burning herself in the pyre her soul departed to the abode of God Siva. Siva bestowing all the benedictions on her send her down to the earth to save the world.

The karanavar having seen the immolation of the virgin was sorrow stricken. He carried the empty pot back home and kept it in the ‘padinjattakam’.Meanwhile as his wife was drawing water from the well, she had a vision of Sri Muchilott Bagvathi in the well. The empty oil pot started tossing from the earth. An astrological ceremony gave them the indusion that the immolated virgin having reached at the apex of mount Kailas, the abode of God Siva, was sent back to earth as Goddess Sri Muchilott Bagavathi. The first temple to honour the deity was erected at Karivellur on the land sponsored by Peringat Nambi. Athiyadam Sree Muchilot Bhagavathi Temple.
