CHATHAMBALLI VISHAKANDAN ചാത്തമ്പള്ളി വിഷകണ്ഠൻ:
എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും തുലാമാസം പത്താം തീയതി രാവിലെ നാല് മണിക്ക് കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ കൊളച്ചേരിക്കടുത്ത ചാത്തമ്പള്ളിക്കാവില്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന തെയ്യമാണ്‌ ചാത്തമ്പള്ളി വിഷകണ്ഠൻ. വിഷ വൈദ്യ വിശാരദനായ തീയ്യ യുവാവായിരുന്നു ഈ തെയ്യം. തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടിയതിനു ശേഷം ഈ തെയ്യം കരുമാരത്ത് നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ ഇല്ലത്തേക്ക് പോകുന്ന പതിവുണ്ട്. മലബാറില്‍ തെയ്യക്കാലം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തോടെയാണ്.
കൊളച്ചേരി ദേശത്തെ പ്രമാണിയും പേരുകേട്ട വിഷ വൈദ്യനുമായിരുന്നു കരുമാരത്ത് നമ്പൂതിരി. ഒരിക്കല്‍ അന്നാട്ടിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഏക സന്താനമായ സ്ത്രീക്ക് പാമ്പ്കടിയേല്‍ക്കുകയും നാട്ടുകാരെല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്നു അവരെ കരുമാരത്ത് നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ അടുക്കല്‍ എത്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. സ്ത്രീ മരണപ്പെട്ടുവെന്ന് നമ്പൂതിരി വിധിയെഴുതിയതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ ബന്ധുക്കള്‍ മൃതശരീരം തിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുപോവുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാല്‍ തീയ സമുദായത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ട കണ്ഠൻ ഈ മൃതശരീരം കാണാനിടയാകുകയും സ്ത്രീയുടെ ശവം കാണാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ശവം കണ്ടതിനു ശേഷം അത് കുളത്തിലേക്ക് ഇടാന്‍ കണ്ഠൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയും കുളത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് കുമിളകള്‍ പൊന്തി വരികയാണെങ്കില്‍ പുറത്തെടുക്കുവാന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. കണ്ഠൻ തെങ്ങിന്റെ മുകളില്‍ കയറി കൊലക്കരുത്ത് എന്നാ മന്ത്രം പ്രയോഗിക്കുകയും മൂന്നാമത്തെ കുമിള പൊന്തിയതിന് ശേഷം സ്ത്രീയെ കരയിലേക്കെടുക്കുകയും സ്ത്രീ എഴുന്നേറ്റിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
സ്ത്രീയുടെ ബന്ധുക്കള്‍ കണ്ഠന് പ്രതിഫലം നല്‍കിയെങ്കിലും കണ്ഠന് അതൊന്നും സ്വീകരിക്കാത്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ അവര്‍ അവരുടെ ഇഷ്ടപ്രകാരം ഒരു പുതിയ വീട് കണ്ഠന് വേണ്ടി പണികഴിപ്പിക്കുകയും അതിന്റെ ഗൃഹപ്രവേശനദിവസം അത് കണ്ഠന് നല്‍കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ വിവരമറിഞ്ഞ കരുമാരത്ത് നമ്പൂതിരി കണ്ഠനെ വിളിച്ചു വരുത്തുകയും കണ്ഠന് ഇല്ലത്ത് നിന്ന് തിരിയേ പോകും വഴി നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ കിങ്കരന്മാര്‍ കണ്ഠനെ അറവില പറമ്പില്‍ വെച്ച് വെട്ടിക്കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.
അറുംകൊല ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട കണ്ഠന് പിന്നീട് പ്രേതമായി കരുമാരത്ത് നമ്പൂതിരിയെ വേട്ടയാടുകയും ഇല്ലത്ത് പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍ നേരിടുകയും ചെയ്തപ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ ജ്യോതിഷിയെ കാണുകയും അവരുടെ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം പരിഹാരമായി വിഷകണ്ഠൻ എന്ന തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടാന്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. അങ്ങിനെയാണ് കണ്ടന്‍ വിഷകണ്ടനായി മാറിയത്.

CHATHAMBALLI VISHAKANDAN
Chathampalli Vishakandan is a Theiyam that is celebrated every year on the 10th day of the month of Libra at four o'clock in the morning at Chathampallikkavil near Kolacheri in Kannur district. This Theiyam was a young Theiya who was a specialist in poison medicine. After tying the Theyam, this Theyam usually goes to the Illam of Karumarat Namboothiri. Theya season in Malabar begins with the beginning of this theya.
Karumarat Namboothiri was the ruler of Kolacheri land and a famous poison healer. Once a woman, the only child of a famous family in that country, was bitten by a snake and all the locals gathered and brought her to Karumarat Namboothiri. After Namboothiri pronounced the woman dead, the relatives took the dead body back. But Kandan, who belonged to the Thea community, happened to see this dead body and expressed his desire to see the dead body of the woman. After seeing the corpse, Kandan asked him to put it in the pond and asked him to take it out if bubbles were coming out of the pond. Kandan climbed on top of the coconut tree and chanted the mantra ``Kolakarut'' and after the third bubble burst he took the woman ashore and the woman was standing up.
When the woman's relatives paid Kandan but Kandan did not accept it, they built a new house for Kandan according to their will and gave it to Kandan on his house entry day. Knowing this information, Karumarat Namboothiri summoned Kandan and while Kandan was turning away from Illam, Namboothiri's Kinkaras killed Kandan at Aravila Paramba.
Legend has it that the slain Kandan later haunts Karumarat Namboothiri as a ghost and when they faced illat problems, they met the astrologer and decided to tie a Theyam named Vishakandan as a solution as per his suggestion. That's how Kandan became Vishakandan.
