CHONNAMMA / CHUKANNAMM ചോന്നമ്മ അഥവാ ചുകന്നമ്മ
വണ്ണാന്‍ സമുദായക്കാര്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന ഒരു അമ്മ തെയ്യമാണ്‌ ചുകന്നമ്മ തെയ്യം. ചോന്നമ്മ എന്നും ഈ തെയ്യം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. കാഴ്ചയില്‍ തമ്പുരാട്ടി തെയ്യവുമായി രൂപ സാദൃശ്യമുണ്ടെങ്കിലും മുടി അത്രത്തോളം വരില്ല
തെയ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഐതിഹ്യം ഇങ്ങിനെയാണ്‌:
സന്താനങ്ങള്‍ ഇല്ലാത്ത ഈറാവളളി മതിലകത്തെ സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് കൊടുക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി കര്‍മ്മി അരി, പൂവ് എന്നിവ കൊണ്ട് മന്ത്രിച്ചു തയ്യാറാക്കി വെച്ച ദിവ്യൗഷധം അവര്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കുന്നതിനു മുന്നേ അവിടെയെത്തിയ ഒരു പെൺമാൻ കഴിക്കാനിടയാകുകയും ആ മാന്‍, മാന്‍കുഞ്ഞിനു പകരം മനുഷ്യകുഞ്ഞിനെ പ്രസവിച്ചതിനാല്‍ അതിനെ അവിടെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു. നായാട്ടിനിറങ്ങിയ കാട്ടു ജാതിക്കാര്‍ ഈ പെണ്‍കുഞ്ഞിനെ സന്താനങ്ങള്‍ ഇല്ലാത്ത ഈറാവളളി മതിലകത്തില്‍ ഏല്‍പ്പിക്കുകയും സന്തുഷ്ടരായ ബ്രാഹ്മണ ദമ്പതിമാര്‍ അതിനെ “വാണാര്‍ പൈതല്‍” എന്ന് പേര് വിളിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
മറ്റ് ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുട്ടികളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഭിന്നമായ സ്വഭാവം വച്ച് പുലര്‍ത്തിയ കുട്ടി ഒരിക്കല്‍ മണ്ണ് വാരിക്കളിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അച്ഛനും അമ്മയും ശകാരിക്കുകയും അടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതിനാല്‍ ദേഷ്യം വന്ന കുട്ടി ഇല്ലം വിട്ടു നടന്നു. എതിരെ വന്ന ആശാരിമാരോടു വഴി ചോദിച്ച കുട്ടിക്ക് അവരില്‍ നിന്ന് മറുപടിയൊന്നും ലഭിക്കാത്തതിനാല്‍ മുന്നോട്ടു തന്നെ നടന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ കുറച്ചു ദൂരം കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ തങ്ങളോടു വഴി ചോദിച്ച പെണ്‍കുട്ടി ഒരു ദേവ കന്യകയാണോ എന്ന സംശയം ആശാരിമാര്‍ക്ക് ഉണ്ടാവുകയും അവര്‍ അവളെ തിരഞ്ഞു കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ആശാരിമാരോട് തനിക്ക് ഒരു ആരൂഡം വേണമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ അത് പണിത് കൊടുക്കുകയും പെണ്‍കുട്ടി അതില്‍ തന്നെ ഇരുപ്പാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
എന്നാല്‍ കുറച്ചു നാള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞ് ഋതുമതിയായ പെണ്‍കുട്ടി ആചാരങ്ങള്‍ മറന്നു അതിനുള്ളില്‍ തന്നെ ഇരുപ്പായ സമയത്ത് ഇതറിഞ്ഞ് സന്തോഷത്തോടെ മകളെ കാണാന്‍ അവിടെക്ക് അരി കൊണ്ട് തയ്യാറാക്കിയ പാല്‍ പുങ്കവുമായി വന്ന അച്ഛനെയും അമ്മയെയും കാണാന്‍ കൂട്ടാക്കാതെയിരുന്നു. അച്ഛനും അമ്മയും കരഞ്ഞു കേണപേക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടും അവള്‍ അവരെ കാണാന്‍ കൂട്ടാക്കാത്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍അവര്‍ പാല്‍പുങ്കം അവിടെ വെച്ച് തിരിയേ ഇല്ലത്തേക്ക് യാത്രയായി. അവര്‍ പോയ ശേഷം അച്ഛനമ്മമാരോടുള്ള ദേഷ്യം കാരണം ആ പാല്‍ പുങ്കത്തിനു ഒറ്റച്ചവിട്ടു കൊടുത്തു. അടിയുടെ ശക്തിയില്‍ തെറിച്ചു പോയ പായസം കുട്ടനാട്ടിലെ കുറുവയലില്‍ പതിച്ചു ചെന്നല്ലായി അവിടെ വളര്‍ന്നു എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
തുടര്‍ന്നു മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ കണ്ണീര്‍ വീണ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഇനി ഞാന്‍ താമസിക്കില്ലെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ഇറങ്ങിയോടിയ പെണ്‍കുട്ടി ഒരു കരിമ്പനയുടെ മുകളില്‍ കയറിക്കൂടി അവിടെ സ്ഥിരമായി താമസിക്കുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. അങ്ങിനെയിരിക്കെ നമ്പ്യാര്‍ സമുദായക്കാര്‍ പനകൊണ്ടുള്ള വില്ലു ഉണ്ടാക്കാനായി പെണ്‍കുട്ടി താമസിച്ച പന മുറിക്കാന്‍ വരികയും അവളുടെ കൊത്തല്ലേ, മുറിക്കല്ലേ എന്നുള്ള അപേക്ഷ വക വെക്കാതെ പന മുറിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയുടെ ഭാരത്താല്‍ പനയുടെ കെട്ടു പൊങ്ങാതിരുന്നപ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ പനയോടു സംസാരിക്കുകയും പെണ്‍കുട്ടിക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രം, നിവേദ്യം പൂജ എന്നിവ ചെയ്ത് കൊടുക്കാമെന്ന് ധാരണയാകുകയും പെണ്‍കുട്ടി അവരോടോന്നിച്ചു പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു. പിന്നീട് ഈ പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയെ ചുകന്നമ്മയായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും അവര്‍ക്ക് പൂജ ചെയ്യുവാനുള്ള കര്‍മ്മിയെയും കണ്ടെത്തികൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

The legend about Theiyat goes like this:

The boy, who had different behavior from other Brahmin children, once while raking the soil, was scolded and beaten by his father and mother, so the boy left Illam in anger. The boy asked the carpenters who came across him for directions, but he did not get any answer from them, so he continued on. But after some distance, the carpenters have a suspicion that the girl who asked them for directions is a deva virgin and they search for her. When she told the carpenters that she wanted an arudham, they built it and the girl sat on it.
But after a few days, the girl forgot the rituals and did not accompany her father and mother who had come there with milk prepared from rice to see her daughter. After her father and mother cried and begged her not to come to see them, they left Palpunkam there and left for Thirie Illam. After they left, because of his anger towards his parents, he gave that milk away to Punkam. It is believed that the soot, which was splashed by the force of the blow, landed in the Kuruvayal of Kuttanad and grew there.
Then the girl ran down saying that she will not stay in the place where her parents' tears fell, climbed on top of a black tree and started living there permanently. Meanwhile, the people of Nambiar community come to cut the palm where the girl stayed to make a palm bow and cut the palm regardless of her request that it should not be carved or cut. But when Pana's knot did not lift due to the girl's weight, they talked to Pana and agreed that they would offer the temple and offer pooja to the girl, and the girl went to them. Later this girl was installed as Chukannamma and Karmi was also found for her to perform puja.
