GULIKAN ഗുളികൻ :
ശിവ ഭക്തനായ മാര്‍ക്കണ്ടയനെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനായി പരമശിവന്‍ കാലനെ വധിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ഭൂമിയിലുണ്ടായത് കാലനില്ലാത്ത ഒരു കാലമായിരുന്നു. തല്‍ഫലമായി ഭൂമി ദേവി താങ്ങാനാവാത്ത ഭാരം കൊണ്ട് പൊറുതി മുട്ടുകയും ദേവന്മാരോട് പരാതി പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദേവന്മാര്‍ മഹാദേവനോടും പരാതി പറഞ്ഞു. വഴിയുണ്ടാക്കാം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് അവരെ വിട്ട മഹാദേവന്റെ ഇടതു കാലിലെ പെരുവിരല്‍ പൊട്ടി പിളര്‍ന്നുണ്ടായ അനര്‍ത്ഥകാരിയും ക്ഷിപ്രപ്രസാദിയുമായ ദേവനാണ് ഗുളികന്. തൃശൂലവും കാലപാശവും നല്‍കി ശിവന്‍ ഗുളികനെ കാലന്റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തി ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഭൂമിയിലേക്കയച്ചു.
ഗുളികന് ജീവജാലങ്ങളുടെ മരണ സമയത്ത് ജീവനെ കൊണ്ട് പോകുന്ന ദേവനാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കാലന്‍, അന്തകന്‍, യമന്‍, കാലാന്തകന്‍ എന്നീ പേരുകളിലും ഗുളികന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അര്‍ദ്ധരാത്രിക്ക് ശേഷം കാവുകളില്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ നടത്തം പൊയ്ക്കാലുകളില്‍ ആണെന്നുള്ളത്‌ ഒരു സവിശേഷതയാണ്. നാഗ വംശത്തില്‍ പെട്ട രൂപമാണ് ഗുളികന്. പാമ്പിന്റെ പത്തിയുമായി മുഖത്തിനും മുടിക്കും ബന്ധമുണ്ട്. നാഗപടത്തിന്റെ രൂപ സാദൃശ്യം മുടിയിലും കാണാം.
മലയ സമുദായക്കാരുടെ പ്രധാന ആരാധനാ മൂര്‍ത്തിയാണ് ഗുളികന്. മറ്റാരുടെ പൂജയെക്കാളും ഇവരുടെ പൂജയില്‍ ആണ് ഗുളികന് പ്രീതനാവുന്നതത്രേ. വെടിയിലും പുകയിലും കരിയിലും നാനാകര്‍മ്മങ്ങളിലും വസിക്കുന്ന ദേവനാണ് താനെന്നാണ് തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ വാമൊഴി. അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ജനനം മുതല്‍ മരണം വരെയുള്ള ചെറുതും വലുതും നല്ലതും ചീത്തയുമായ എല്ലാ കര്‍മ്മങ്ങളിലും ഗുളികന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
കുരുത്തോലയുടെ വഞ്ചിയും കയ്യില്‍ ദണ്ടും കുരുത്തോല കൊണ്ട് കെട്ടിയ ആകോലും അരിചാന്തു പൂശിയ ദേഹത്ത് മൂന്നു കറുത്ത വരകളുമായിട്ടാണ് ഗുളികന്റെ വേഷം. മുഖത്തും ദേഹത്ത് പൊക്കിള്‍ വരെയും അരിചാന്തിടും. ഈര്‍ക്കില്‍ കൊണ്ട് മുഖത്ത് നിന്നും വിരല് കൊണ്ട് ദേഹത്ത് നിന്നും വരകളാവാന്‍ അരിചാന്ത് മാറ്റും. പുരികത്തിനു തൊട്ടു മേലേന്ന് തുടങ്ങി കണ്ണിനു താഴെ വരെ മഷി. തലപ്പാളി കെട്ടി, തലത്തണ്ട കെട്ടും. കുരുത്തോല മടലോടെ ഈര്‍ക്കില്‍ കളഞ്ഞ് അരയില്‍ ചുറ്റിക്കെട്ടും. ഇതിനെ കുരുത്തോലവഞ്ചിയെന്നും ഒലിയുടുപ്പു എന്നും പറയും. കാലില്‍ ചിലങ്കയും പിറകില്‍ നിതംബം വരെ മറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ചാമരമുണ്ടാവും.
എല്ലാവരും ദൈവങ്ങളടക്കം ഗുളികനെ നോക്കാന്‍ ഭയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. ഒരിക്കല്‍ ശിവനും പാര്‍വതിയും കൂടെ നടക്കാന്‍ പോയ സമയത്ത് പാര്‍വതി ഇക്കാര്യം പറയുകയും ശിവന്‍ ഗുളികനെ അപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ ഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് അയക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവത്രേ. ഇത് തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ കളിയാട്ടത്തിനിടയില്‍ അഭിനയിച്ചു കാണിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഗുളികന് തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പേര് കെട്ട തെയ്യകാവ് ആണ് നീലേശ്വരത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള ബെങ്കണകാവ്. കാവിന്റെ സമീപ വാസികള്‍ അടക്കം വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നത് ഗുളികന്റെ സാമീപ്യം ഉള്ളത് കാരണമാണ് തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ക്ഷേമൈശ്വര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതെന്നാണ്.
ചില കാവുകളില്‍ ഗുളികന് തെയ്യവും വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തിയും ഒന്നിച്ചു ചേര്‍ന്നു ആടുന്ന പതിവുണ്ട്. മുഖപ്പാളയും കുരുത്തോലയുമണിഞ്ഞ് കയ്യില്‍ ത്രുശൂലവും വെള്ളോട്ട് മണിയുമായാണ് ഗുളികന് തെയ്യമിറങ്ങുക. ശൂലം നീട്ടി കുത്താനോങ്ങിയും വായ്ക്കുരവയിടുന്ന കുട്ടികളുടെ പിന്നാലെ പാഞ്ഞും പൊടിക്കൈകള്‍ കാട്ടി കാണികളെ ചിരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന കോലമാണ് ഗുളികന് തെയ്യം.
ഉന്മത്ത ഗുളികൻ, ഉച്ചാര ഗുളികൻ, മാരണ ഗുളികൻ, കാര ഗുളികൻ, കരിം ഗുളികൻ, സേവക്കാര ഗുളികൻ, തെക്കൻ ഗുളികൻ, വടക്കൻ ഗുളികൻ എന്നിങ്ങനെ എട്ടോളം ഗുളികന്മാർ ഉണ്ട്.

GULIKAN :
When Lord Shiva killed Kalan to save Markandaya, a devotee of Shiva, there was a time without Kalan on earth.
As a result, Bhumi Devi was overwhelmed by the unbearable weight and complained to the gods. The gods also complained to Mahadev. Gulikan is a mischievous and auspicious deity whose left big toe broke and split when Mahadev left them saying that he would make a way for them. Giving him the trident and Kalapasa, Shiva sent Gulika to earth to do the work of Kalan.
Gulika is believed to be the deity who takes away life at the time of death. Gulikan is also known as Kalan, Antakan, Yama and Kalantakan. It is a characteristic that this Theiyat, which hangs in its cages after midnight, walks on its hind legs. Gulikana is a form belonging to the Naga race. The face and hair are associated with the serpent's tail. The resemblance of the Nagapata form can also be seen in the hair.
Gulikan is the main idol worshiped by the Malayan community.
It is in their pooja than anyone else's pooja that Gulikan is pleased with. Theiyat says that he is the god who resides in fire, smoke, charcoal and various deeds. Because of that, it is believed that Gulika will be present in all the small and big, good and bad deeds from birth to death.
Gulikana is dressed as a kuruthola boat, a stick in his hand, an akol tied with kuruthola and three black stripes on his body covered with arichanthu. The face and body will be covered up to the navel. Arichant will change the lines from the face with the ear and from the body with the finger. Ink from just above the eyebrow to below the eye. The turban is tied and the scalp is tied. The kuruthola is wrapped around the waist with a fold. It is called Kurutholavanchi and Oliutuppu. There will be chilangka on the feet and chamaram on the back which is hidden up to the buttock.
Everyone, including the gods, was afraid to look at the pill. Once when Shiva and Parvati went for a walk together, Parvati said this and Shiva immediately sent Gulika to earth. This is often acted out during Theiyat's play. The most popular name of Gulikan Theiyat is Ketta Theiyakav, Benkanakav near Nileswaram. Even the nearby residents of Kavi believe that their proximity to Gullikan brings them good fortune.
In some kavs, there is a custom of dancing Gulikan Theiyam and Vishnumurthy together.
Wearing a face mask and kuruthola, Gulikan comes to Theiyam with a thrusula and a bell in his hand. Gulikan Theiyam is a Kolam that makes the audience laugh by stretching out the skewers, running after the children who are shouting.
