KHANDANAR KELAN കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്‍ :
തന്റെ പതിവ് നായാട്ടു കഴിഞ്ഞു മടങ്ങി വരികയായിരുന്ന വയനാട്ടുകുലവന്‍ വഴിയില്‍ മാറില്‍ രണ്ടു നാഗങ്ങളുമായി വെണ്ണീറായി കിടക്കുന്ന കേളനെ കാണുകയും തന്റെ പിന്‍കാല് കൊണ്ട് വെണ്ണീറില്‍ തൊഴിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവത്രേ. അപ്പോള്‍ ദേവന്റെ പിന്‍കാലു പിടിച്ചു കേളന്‍ മാറില്‍ നാഗങ്ങളുമായി പുനര്‍ജന്മം നേടി ദൈവക്കരുവായി മാറി. ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടത് കൊണ്ട് നീ “കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്‍” എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടും എന്ന് അനുഗ്രഹിച്ച് തന്റെ ഇടതു ഭാഗത്ത് ഇരിക്കാന്‍ പീഠവും കയ്യില്‍ ആയുധവും പൂജയും കല്‍പ്പിച്ചു കൊടുത്തു.

ആത്മപാരിതില്‍ പുകള്‍പെറ്റ കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്‍”
എന്നാണു കേളനെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നത്.
പയ്യന്നൂരിനടുത്ത രാമന്തളിയിലെ കുന്നരു എന്ന പ്രദേശത്തെ മേലേടത്ത് ചക്കി എന്ന സ്ത്രീക്ക് അവരുടെ വയനാട്ടിലെ പൂമ്പുനം എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെ കാട്ടില്‍ വെച്ച് കളഞ്ഞു കിട്ടിയ കുട്ടിയാണ് കേളന്‍. സ്വന്തം പുത്രനെ പോലെ വളര്‍ത്തിയ കേളന്‍ നല്ല വീര്യവും ആരോഗ്യമുള്ളവനുമായി വളര്‍ന്നു. തന്റെ അമ്മയെ കുന്നരുവിലെ തങ്ങളുടെ കൃഷി സ്ഥലങ്ങള്‍ നല്ല വിളവെടുപ്പോടെ സമ്പല്‍ സമൃദ്ധമാക്കാന്‍ ഏറെ സഹായിച്ചു. ഇതില്‍ സംതൃപ്തയായ ആ മാതാവ് തന്റെ വയനാട്ടിലെ നാല് കാടുകള്‍ കൂടി ചേര്‍ന്ന പൂമ്പുനം എന്ന സ്ഥലം കൃഷിയോഗ്യമാക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി കേളനെ നിയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
അമ്മയുടെ വാക്കുകള്‍ മനസ്സാ വരിച്ച കേളന്‍ തന്റെ ആയുധമായ വില്ലും ശരങ്ങളും ഒപ്പം പൂമ്പുനം വെട്ടി തെളിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടിയുള്ള ഉരുക്കും ഇരുമ്പും കൊണ്ടുള്ള പണിയായുധങ്ങളുമായി യാത്ര പുറപ്പെട്ടു. വീട്ടില്‍ വെച്ച കള്ളാവോളം മോന്തിയ കേളന്‍ വഴിയില്‍ വെച്ച് കഴിക്കാനായി ഒരു കുറ്റി കള്ളു കയ്യിലും മറ്റൊന്ന് മാറാപ്പിലുമായി കരുതി.
പൂമ്പുനത്തില്‍ എത്തിയ കേളന്‍ നാല്‍ക്കാടുകളും വെട്ടിത്തെളിച്ചു. എന്നാല്‍ നാലാമത്തെ പൂമ്പുനത്തിനു നടുവിലുള്ള കാളിയും കരാളിയുമെന്ന രണ്ടു നാഗങ്ങള്‍ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന നെല്ലിമരം മാത്രം വെട്ടിയില്ല.
പൂമ്പുനം നാലും തീയിടാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ച കേളന്‍ ഓരോ പൂമ്പുനത്തിന്റെയും നാലു മൂലയിലും നാല് കോണിലും തീയിട്ട് അതി സാഹസികമായി അതിനു നടുവില്‍ നിന്ന് പുറത്ത് ചാടി വരികയായിരുന്നു. ഇങ്ങിനെ ഒന്നും രണ്ടും കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ കേളനു അത് വളരെ ആവേശമായി തോന്നി. അങ്ങിനെ മൂന്നാം പൂമ്പുനവും കഴിഞ്ഞു ഒടുവില്‍ നെല്ലിമരം നില്‍ക്കുന്ന നാലാമത്തെ പൂമ്പുനത്തിലും ഇപ്രകാരം തീയിട്ട് പുറത്ത് വരാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കവേ അഗ്നിയും വായുവും കൊപിച്ചത് കാരണം എട്ട് ദിക്കില്‍ നിന്നും തീ ഒരേപോലെ ആളിപടര്‍ന്നു. തനിക്ക് പുറത്ത് ചാടാവുന്നതിലും ഉയരത്തില്‍ അഗ്നിപടര്‍ന്നത് കണ്ട് ഇനി നെല്ലി മരം മാത്രമേ തനിക്ക് രക്ഷയുള്ളൂ എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ കേളന്‍ അതിന്റെ മുകളിലേക്ക് ചാടി കയറി. അപ്പോള്‍ അതിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന രണ്ടു നാഗങ്ങളും പ്രാണ ഭയത്താല്‍ കേളന്റെ ദേഹത്തേക്ക് പാഞ്ഞു കയറുകയും ഇടതു മാറിലും വലതു മാറിലുമായി ആഞ്ഞു കൊത്തുകയും കേളനും നാഗങ്ങളും കൂടി അഗ്നിയിലെക്ക് വീഴുകയും അവര്‍ ചാരമായി മാറുകയും ചെയ്തു.
പൂമ്പുനത്തിലെ തീയില്‍ നിന്നും ചാടി പുറത്തേക്ക് ഇറങ്ങുന്നതിനെ കാണിക്കാന്‍ ഈ തെയ്യം അഗ്നിയിലൂടെ കയറി ഇറങ്ങും. നാലായി പകുത്ത മേലേരി കൂട്ടിയ ശേഷം നാലും ഒന്നാക്കി ഓലയിട്ടു തീ കത്തിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്യുക. ആളുന്ന തീയിലൂടെ ചാടിയിറങ്ങുന്ന കേളന്‍ തെയ്യത്തെ ആളുകള്‍ ശ്വാസമടക്കിപ്പിടിച്ചാണ് വീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. വണ്ണാന്‍ സമുദായക്കാരാണ് ഈ തെയ്യക്കോലം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌.

Wayanatukulavan, who was returning from his usual hunt, saw Kelan lying in the water with two cobras on the road and threw him in the water with his hind leg.
Then Kelan took hold of the god's hind leg and was reborn with the nagas on his back and became the god's calf. He blessed me that you will be known as "Kandanar Kelan" because of what I saw and ordered me to sit on his left side on the peetha with weapon in hand and do puja.

Kelan is the child of a woman named Meledada Chakki of Kunnaru in Ramantali, near Payyannur, who was found lost in the forest at Poompunam in Wayanad.
Raised like his own son, Kelan grew strong and healthy. He helped his mother a lot to make their farming land in the hills prosperous with good harvests. Satisfied with this, the mother assigns Kelan to make Poompunam, a land of four forests in Wayanad, suitable for cultivation.
Taking his mother's words to heart, Kelan set out with his weapons of bow and arrows and tools made of steel and iron to cut the flowers and shine them. Monthia Kelan kept one stick of toddy in his hand and another in his bag to eat on the road as much as toddy that he kept at home.
On reaching Poompunum, Kelan cleared all four forests.
But only the rice tree in the middle of the fourth flower, where the two nagas, Kali and Karali, lived, was not cut.
Kelan, who decided to set fire to all the poompunams, set fire to the four corners and four corners of each poompunam and jumped out from the middle of it very daringly. After the first and second, Kelen felt very excited. Thus, after the third pombun, and finally at the fourth pompun, where the rice tree is standing, when he tried to come out like this, the fire and the air were raging, so the fire spread equally from eight directions. Seeing that the fire was higher than he could jump out of, Kelan realized that only the Nelly tree was his only escape, so he jumped on top of it. Then the two Nagas in it rushed to the body of Kela out of fear of their lives and carved flames on the left shoulder and the right shoulder.
This Theyam will ascend and descend through the fire to represent jumping out of the Poombun fire. After collecting the four pieces of Meleri, all the four are put together and lit on fire. People watch with bated breath as Kelan Theiya jumps through the burning fire. This Theiyakolam is built by the Vannan community.
