KSHETRAPALAKAN ക്ഷേത്ര പാലകന്‍:

‘ദമുഖന്‍’ എന്ന അസുരനുമായി പരാജയപ്പെട്ട ദേവന്മാര്‍ ശിവന്റെ സഹായം അഭ്യര്‍ഥിച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ ശിഷ്യനായ പരശുരാമനെ അയച്ചുവെങ്കിലും ദമുഖന്‍ പരശുരാമനെയും പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തിയതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ പരമശിവന്‍ തന്റെ തൃക്കണ്ണില്‍ നിന്നും കാളരാത്രിയെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും ദേവി ദമുഖന്‍ എന്ന അസുരനെ കഴുത്തറുത്ത് കൊന്നു ചോര കുടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാല്‍ ദേവിയുടെ കോപം ശമിക്കാത്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ ശിവന്‍ മാദക ലീലകള്‍ കാട്ടി നൃത്തമാടി. അപ്പോള്‍ രതി വിവശയായ ദേവി ശിവനെ വാരിപ്പുണര്‍ന്നുവെന്നും അതില്‍ അവര്‍ക്കുണ്ടായ പുത്രനാണ് ക്ഷേത്രപാലകന്‍ എന്നുമാണ് വിശ്വാസം. നായന്മാര്‍ ഭക്ത്യാദര പൂര്‍വ്വം ആരാധിച്ചു വരുന്ന തെയ്യമാണ്‌ ക്ഷേത്രപാലകന്‍.

ദുഷ്ടരെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കുവാനായി വേട്ടയ്ക്കൊരു മകന്റെയും വൈരജാതനീശ്വരന്റെയും സഹായിയായി ക്ഷേത്രപാലകനെ ഭൂമിയിലെക്കയക്കുകയും ദേവ കല്‍പ്പന പ്രകാരം നെടിയിരിപ്പ് സ്വരൂപത്തില്‍ എത്തിയ ക്ഷേത്രപാലകനെ സാമൂതിരി തന്റെ പടനായകനാക്കി. സാമൂതിരിയുടെ മരുമകള്‍ക്ക് കോലത്തിരിയുടെ മരുമകന്‍ കേരള വര്‍മ്മയില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ മകന്ന്‍ ഒരു രാജ്യം സ്വന്തമായി വേണമെന്ന് വന്നപ്പോള്‍ കോലത്തിരി അള്ളോഹന്റെ അള്ളടം നാട് പിടിക്കുവാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. യുവരാജാവിന്റെ കരുത്തും വീര്യവും പരീക്ഷിച്ചറിയാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ‘എട്ടുകുടക്കല്‍ പ്രഭുക്കള്‍’ ഭരിക്കുന്ന അള്ളടം രാജ്യം വെട്ടി പിടിക്കുവാന്‍ കോലത്തിരി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടതിന്‍ പ്രകാരം യുവരാജാവ് ക്ഷേത്രപാലകന്‍, വേട്ടയ്ക്കൊരു മകന്‍, വൈരജാതനീശ്വരന്‍ എന്നിവരുമായി പോയി അള്ളടം പിടിച്ചടക്കുന്നു. കാളരാത്രിയമ്മയും ഇവരെ ഇതില്‍ സഹായിച്ചു.

പയ്യന്നൂര്‍ പെരുമാളിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം വാങ്ങി യാത്ര തുടര്‍ന്ന ക്ഷേത്രപാലകന്‍ അങ്ങിനെ അള്ളടം സ്വരൂപത്തിന്റെ (രാജ വംശത്തിന്റെ) കുലദൈവങ്ങളായി മാറി കാളരാത്രിയോടൊപ്പം. വലിയ മുടി വെച്ച് ആടുന്ന ദേവന്റെ മുടി രണ്ടു മൂന്നു പേരുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മൂന്നു വലം വെച്ച ശേഷം എടുത്തു മാറ്റുകയാണ് പതിവ്. അതിനു മുന്നായി ആയുധങ്ങളും മാറ്റും. തെയ്യം ചുവപ്പ് മുടിയും ധരിക്കാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും കൂടുതലായി കറുപ്പ് മുടിയാണ് ധരിച്ചു വരുന്നത്. 

ക്ഷേത്രപാലകനും കാളരാത്രി മഹാകാളിയും കുടികൊള്ളുന്ന ഉദിനൂര്‍ കോവിലില്‍ നിമിത്ത സൂചന നല്‍കുന്ന ഒരു ചടങ്ങുണ്ട്. ചക്ക കൊറുക്കല്‍ എന്നാണ് ഇതറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. കൂലോത്തെ വടക്കെ നടയില്‍ കെട്ടി തൂക്കിയ ചക്ക മനിയേരി അച്ചന്‍ ദൈവ നിയോഗം വന്ന പോലെ വാളുമായി വന്നു ഇടത്തും വലത്തുമായി വാള്‍ കൊണ്ട് ഓരോ വെട്ടു വെട്ടുന്നതാണ് അങ്ങിനെ വെട്ടിയാലും ചക്ക വീഴാതെ അവിടെ നില്‍ക്കണമെന്നാണ് പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന. താഴെ വീഴുന്നത് അശുഭകരമാണത്രേ. ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ഒറ്റ ചവിണിയുടെ മേല്‍ ഒക്കെ ചക്ക വീഴാതെ നില്‍ക്കും. അത് കണ്ടു ഭക്തര്‍ ആശ്വാസം കൊള്ളും. നായന്മാര്‍ ക്ഷേത്രപാലകനെ തൊണ്ടച്ചന്‍ എന്നും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

It is believed that the goddess Rati gave birth to Lord Shiva and the son born to them is the guardian of the temple. Theyam is the guardian of the temple, whom the Nayans worship reverently.

In order to kill the wicked, the temple guardian was sent to the earth as the helper of a son and Vairajataneswara to hunt and the temple guardian who came in the form of a forehead as per the command of the gods, made the temple guardian his hero. When Zamothiri’s daughter-in-law came to want a kingdom of her own from Kolathiri’s son-in-law Kerala Varma, Kolathiri decided to take Allohan’s Alladam Nadu. In order to test the strength and valor of the young king, the young king goes and captures Alladam with the temple guard, a son of the hunter and Vairajathaneswaran, as requested by Kolathiri to capture the kingdom of Alladam ruled by the ‘Ettukudakkal Prabhu’. Kalratriyamma also helped them in this.

After receiving the blessings of Payyannur Perumal, the temple keeper continued his journey and thus became the family gods of Alladam Swarupa (royal clan) along with Kalaratri. With the help of two or three people, the hair of the deity who swings with big hair is usually removed after making three laps around the temple. Weapons will also be changed before that. Theyam also wears red hair but mostly wears black hair.

There is a ceremony to mark the occasion in the Udinur temple where the temple guardian and Kalaratri Mahakali reside. This is known as chewing gum. Chakka Maniyeri Achan, who tied and hung Kulom in the northern courtyard, came with a sword as God’s command and cut each cut with the sword to the left and right. Falling down is inauspicious. Sometimes gum will stand on a single step without falling. Devotees will be relieved to see it. Nayans also call the temple guardian Thondachan.
