ഭൂമിയില്‍ ഏറ്റവും വീര്യമുള്ള തറവാട്ടില്‍ ജനിച്ച വീരനാണ് കുടി വീരന്‍. ആയുധാഭ്യാസത്തില്‍ അഗ്രഗന്യനായ വീരന്‍ ശത്രുക്കള്‍ക്ക് ഭയം വിതച്ചും നാട്ടുകാര്‍ക്ക് നന്മ വിതച്ചും ജീവിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ അസൂയക്കാരുടെ ഏഷണി കേട്ട് മനം കലങ്ങിയ സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗ രാജാവ് കാലദൂതനെ ഭൂമിയിലേക്കയക്കുകയും വിധിക്ക് കീഴടങ്ങിയ വീരന്‍ കാലദൂതനോടോപ്പം തിരുനെല്ലി എത്തി മായത്താന്‍ കടവില്‍ മറഞ്ഞു എന്നും അങ്ങിനെ വീരന്‍ കുടിവീരന്‍ ആയി തെയ്യക്കോലമായി എന്നുമാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.
