കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ ചില കാവുകളില്‍ മാത്രം കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന തെയ്യമാണ്‌ മുതലതെയ്യം. തൃപ്പണ്ടാരത്തമ്മ ദേവിയാണ് മുതല തെയ്യമായി കാവുകളില്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌. മുതലയെ പോലെ ഇഴഞ്ഞു ക്ഷേത്രം വലം വെയ്ക്കുന്ന തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന സമയമത്രയും ഇഴഞ്ഞു തന്നെയാണ് ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക്‌ അനുഗ്രഹം നല്‍കുന്നത്. മറ്റ് തെയ്യങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ ഈ തെയ്യം വായ്‌വാക്കുകളൊന്നും ഉരിയാടാറില്ല. തുലാമാസത്തിലെ പത്താമുദയത്തിനു ശേഷമാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം ക്കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്. നടുവില്‍ പോത്തുകുണ്ട് വീരഭദ്ര ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ ഈ തെയ്യം നവംബറില്‍ കെട്ടിയാടാറുണ്ട്. കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന സമയത്ത് ഇലത്താളത്തിന്റെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ തോറ്റം ചൊല്ലുന്ന രീതി ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ മാത്രം പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്.
ഇഴ ജീവി ശല്യത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് രക്ഷ നേടാന്‍ മുതലദൈവത്തെ വിളിച്ചാല്‍ മതിയെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. തലയിലെ പാള എഴുത്തിനു തേള്‍, പല്ലി, പാമ്പ്, പഴുതാര, ആമ തുടങ്ങിയ ഇഴ ജീവികളെ വരച്ചതാണ്. കുരുത്തോലക്ക് പകരം കവുങ്ങിന്‍ ഓലയാണ് ഉടയാട. മുഖത്തെഴുത്തിന് വട്ടക്കണ്ണ്‍, തലപ്പാട്ടി ചെന്നിമലര്‍ മുടിയും കാണിമുണ്ട് ചുവപ്പുമാണ്.
തൃപ്പണ്ടാറത്തെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ നിത്യപൂജ ചെയ്തിരുന്ന പൂജാരി എത്താതിരുന്നപ്പോള്‍ പുഴയില്‍ ചൂണ്ടയിടുകയായിരുന്ന ആദി തോയാടനെ മുതല ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ എത്തിച്ചു എന്നും പൂജ മുടങ്ങാതെ കാത്തു എന്നുമാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. മുതലയായി എത്തിയത് തൃപ്പണ്ടാറത്തമ്മയാണെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. പൂജയ്ക്ക് വൈകിയെത്തിയ ബ്രാഹമണനെ പുറത്തിരുത്തി. മാവിലന്‍ സമുദായക്കാരാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌.
എന്നാല്‍ വേറൊരു ഭാഷ്യം ഉള്ളത് ഇങ്ങിനെയാണ്‌. പുഴയില്‍ വെള്ളം പൊങ്ങിയതിനാല്‍ അന്തിത്തിരി വെക്കാന്‍ കരയ്ക്ക് ഇക്കരെ വരാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ കുഴങ്ങിയ പൂജാരിയെ ദേവി മുതലരൂപം പൂണ്ടു പുറത്ത് ഇക്കരെയെത്തിച്ചു എന്നാണു കഥ. കഴുത്ത് നീട്ടി കണ്ണുരുട്ടിയാണത്രെ ഈ തെയ്യം ഭക്തരെ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നത്.

Muthala Theyyam
Muthala theyyam is a theiyam that is tied only in some kavs of Kannur district. Thripandaratamma Devi is tied to the cowries as a crocodile. Crawling around the temple like a crocodile, Theyam gives blessings to the devotees all the time. Unlike other Theiyams, this Theiyam does not utter any words. This Theyam is celebrated after the 10th day of the month of Libra. This Theyam is celebrated in the month of November at Veerabhadra Temple in the middle of Potukund. The method of reciting Thotam with the accompaniment of Ilatala during the tying is unique to this Theiyam.
It is believed that just calling the crocodile god is enough to get rid of the nuisance of the lizard creature. For the pala inscription on the head, reptiles such as scorpion, lizard, snake, lizard, turtle are drawn. Udayada is kaungin ola instead of kuruthola. The face has round eyes, the head has long hair, and the hair is red.
Legend has it that when the priest who was performing the daily pooja at Tripandaram temple did not arrive, Adi Toyadan, who was baiting in the river, was brought to the temple by the crocodile and kept waiting for the pooja. It is believed that Tripandaratamma came as a crocodile. A Brahmin who was late for the puja was kicked out. This theyam is tied by the Mavilan community.
But there is another version like this. The story goes that the goddess took the form of a crocodile and brought the priest out of the water, who was confused and unable to come to the shore to put the antithiri. This Theyam blesses the devotees by stretching their necks and rolling their eyes.
