OORPAZHASSI / OORPAZHACHI / MELOOR DAYARAPPAN / DAIVATHAR ഊര്‍പഴശ്ശി, ഊര്‍പഴച്ചി, മേലൂര്‍ ദയരപ്പന്‍ (ദൈവത്താര്‍):
മേലൂര്‍ കോട്ടയിലെ മേലൂരിളം കന്യാവിന് വിഷ്ണു ഭഗവാനില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ പുത്രനാണ് മേലൂര്‍ ദയരപ്പന്‍ എന്ന ഊര്പ്പഴശ്ശി ദൈവം. വേട്ടയ്ക്കൊരു മകന്റെ ഉറ്റ ചങ്ങാതിയാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം. മറ്റ് തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ ആദരസൂചകമായി ഐശ്വര്യ പ്രഭു എന്നാണ് ഈ തെയ്യത്തെ സംബോധന ചെയ്യുന്നത്. വേട്ടയ്ക്കൊരു മകനെ നടന്നു വാഴ്ചയെന്നും ഊര്‍പഴച്ചിയെ ഇരുന്നു വാഴ്ചയെന്നും പറയാറുണ്ട്‌. വേട്ടയ്ക്കൊരു മകനെ അഭിമാന്യ പ്രഭു എന്നാണു നായന്മാര്‍ വിളിച്ചു വരുന്നത്. രാമവതാരമോ മത്സ്യാവതാരമോ അല്ലാത്ത ഊര്‍പഴശ്ശി ദൈവത്തെയും ഗ്രാമീണര്‍ ഭക്തിപ്പൂര്‍വ്വം ദൈവത്താര്‍ എന്നാണു വിളിക്കുന്നത്‌. വണ്ണാന്‍ സമുദായക്കാരാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌.
ദിവ്യാത്ഭുത ശക്തികള്‍ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച ഈ കുട്ടി കാച്ചികുടിക്കാന്‍ പാല്‍ നല്‍കാതിരുന്ന ചീരുവമ്മയെയും (അക്കമ്മയെയും) ആഭരണമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നതില്‍ നിന്നും സ്വര്‍ണ്ണം തട്ടിയ തട്ടാനെയും ശിക്ഷിച്ചു. ഗുരുവിനെ കുത്തിക്കൊന്നു. ഇതേക്കുറിച്ച് ചോദിച്ച അമ്മയ്ക്ക് നേരെ കഠാരയെറിയാനും ദയരപ്പന്‍ തയ്യാറായി. ചിത്രതൂണ്‍ മറഞ്ഞു നിന്നതിനാലാണ് അമ്മ അതില്‍ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടത്. എന്നാല്‍ തനിക്ക് അവകാശപ്പെട്ട അങ്കവും ചുങ്കവും കയ്യടക്കി വെച്ചിരുന്നവരെയെല്ലാം ദയരപ്പന്‍ കഠാര തറച്ചു കൊന്നു. അങ്ങിനെ മുപ്പത്താറു വയസ്സ് പിന്നിടുമ്പോഴേക്കും അറുപത്തി നാല് കൊലപാതകം ചെയ്ത വീരനായി വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ടു.
പിന്നീടാണ് ദയരപ്പന്‍ ചുരിക കെട്ടി ചേകോനായതും ബാലുശ്ശേരി കോട്ടയിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നതും ചങ്ങാതി വേട്ടക്കൊരു മകനെ കാണുന്നതും. മേലൂരില്‍ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ ദയരപ്പനെ പെറ്റമ്മയും വിഷ്ണു ഭഗവാനും അരിയിട്ടു വാഴിച്ചു. അമ്മയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹത്തോടെ ‘പഴയ നാട്ടറുപതു കുറുപ്പന്‍മാര്‍’അകമ്പടിയോടെ ഊര്‍പ്പഴശ്ശിക്കാവില്‍ പട്ടം കെട്ടി കിരീടം ചൂടിയ ദയരപ്പന്‍ ഒരു വ്യാഴവട്ടക്കാലം (പന്ത്രണ്ടു വര്ഷം) നാട് ഭരിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് മേലൂർ കോട്ട, കീക്കിലൂർ കോട്ട, കീഴ്മാടം, പുഷ്പവള്ളിക്കളരി, മതിരങ്ങോട്ട് മാടം, കോതിരങ്ങോട്ട് ചിറ്റാരി, വയനാട്ട് കോട്ട എന്നിവയ്ക്കധിപനായി പന്ത്രണ്ടു കൊല്ലം വാണതായി തോറ്റം പാട്ടില്‍ പറയുന്നു. ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ കാലം ഊര്പ്പഴശ്ശി കാവില്‍ നിന്നതിനാലാണ് ഊര്പ്പഴശ്ശി ദൈവം എന്ന പേര് വന്നതെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ (ഊര്‍പഴശ്ശി തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ) സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തില്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന ഒരു നായാട്ടു ദേവതയാണ് പുതിച്ചോന്‍ തെയ്യം. എന്നാല്‍ ഇത് അര്‍ജ്ജുനനു പ്രത്യക്ഷനായ കിരാത മൂര്ത്തിയാണെന്നും കൂടെ കെട്ടി പുറപ്പെടുന്ന പൂളോന്‍ തെയ്യം അര്‍ജുനനാണെന്നും അതല്ല കുറുന്തില്‍ പൊതുവാള്‍ക്ക് കാട്ടില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷനായ ദിവ്യ ദേവനാണെന്നും വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്‌.
ശ്രീ ഊര്‍പഴശ്ശി കാവ് (ഊര്‍പഴച്ചി കാവ്) കണ്ണൂര്‍ തലശ്ശേരി റോഡില്‍ ഇടക്കാട്‌ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. അതിപുരാതനമായ ഈ കാവ് ചരിത്രത്തില്‍ ഇടം പിടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഒപ്പം പുരാണങ്ങളിലും. ഊരില്‍ പഴകിയ ഈച്ചില്‍ കാവ് അഥവാ ഊരില്‍ പഴകിയ അച്ചി കാവ് എന്നതാണ് പേര് കൊണ്ട് അര്‍ത്ഥമാക്കുന്നത്.
കാളി ദേവി (പാര്‍വതി) തന്റെ കറുപ്പ് നിറം മാറിക്കിട്ടാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ഒറ്റക്കാലില്‍ നൂറിലധികം വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനനടത്തി ബ്രഹ്മാവില്‍ നിന്ന് താമരയുടെ നിറം നേടിയ സ്ഥലം കൂടിയാണിത്. അങ്ങിനെ കാളി (കറുപ്പ് നിറത്തില്‍) നിന്ന് താമരയുടെ നിറത്തില്‍ ഗൌരിയായി മാറി. ഒപ്പം ബ്രഹ്മാവ്‌ ദേവി ഈ ഊരിന്റെ ദേവിയായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടും എന്നും അനുഗ്രഹം നല്‍കിയത്രെ. ശിവന്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ ദേവിയുടെ നിറത്തെപ്പറ്റി കളിയാക്കിയത് കൊണ്ടാണ് പാര്‍വതി ഇതിനു തുനിഞ്ഞത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലാണ് പരശുരാമന്‍ പില്‍ക്കാലത്ത് വിഷ്ണുവും ശിവനും ഒന്നിച്ചു ഉള്ള ദൈവത്താറും വേട്ടക്കൊരുമകനും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചത്. അങ്ങിനെ ശിവ-വൈഷ്ണവ-ശക്തി കേന്ദ്രമായി ഈ കാവ് മാറി. ഇവിടെ വെച്ചാണ് വേട്ടയ്ക്കൊരു മകന്‍ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ശൌര്യ വീര്യ കോപാദികള്‍ ഊര്പ്പഴശ്ശി ദൈവത്താര്‍ ശമിപ്പിച്ചത്. ഇവിടുത്തെ മേലെകോട്ടത്തിലാണ് തൊണ്ടച്ചന്‍ ദൈവം ഇരിക്കുന്നത്. ശിവനും വിഷ്ണുവും ഗുരുവും വൈദ്യനുമായി ഒറ്റരൂപത്തില്‍ ഉള്ളത് ഇവിടെയാണ്. ഈ ദൈവം ക്ഷേത്രപാലന്‍ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.

Melur Dayarappan is the son of Lord Vishnu to the Melurilam maiden of Melur fort. This Theyam is the best friend of a hunting son. Other Theiyas address this Theiya as Aishwarya Prabhu as a sign of respect. It is said that the son of a hunter is born by walking and the daughter is born by sitting. The Nayans call a son of Vetta as Pamphya Prabhu. Urpazhassi God, who is neither Rama avatar nor Matsya avatar, is also reverently called as Daivathar by the villagers. This theyam is tied by the Vannan community.
This child, who exhibited miraculous powers, punished Cheeruvamma (Akamma) for not giving her milk to drink and Thattan for stealing gold. Guru was stabbed to death. Dayarappan was ready to throw a dagger at his mother who asked about this. Mother escaped from the picture pole because it was hidden. But Dayarappan stabbed and killed all those who were holding the Angam and Chumka which belonged to him. By the time he was thirty-six years old, he was hailed as a hero who had committed sixty-four murders.
It was only later that Dayarappan got dressed and went to Balusherry fort and met a son while hunting for a friend. On his return to Melur, Dayarappan was greeted by Petamma and Lord Vishnu. With his mother's blessing, Dayarappan, who was crowned with a kite at Urpachassikav and accompanied by 'Pashaya Nattaruptu Kuruppanmar', ruled the country for one Jupiter cycle (twelve years). According to Thotam song, he ruled Melur Fort, Keikilur Fort, Keezhamdam, Pushpavallikalari, Mathirangot Madam, Kothirangot Chitari and Wayanad Fort for twelve years. It is said that the name Urpachassi God came from the fact that Urpachassi stayed in the cave for the longest time.
Putichon Theiyam is a Nayatu deity who is attached to the concept of this Theiyam (Urpazhassi Theiyam). But there is a belief that this is the Kiratha Murthy who appeared to Arjuna and the Pullon Theyam who came out tied with him is Arjuna or the divine god who appeared in the forest to the common sword in Kurunthi.
Sri Urpazhassi Kav (Urpazhachi Kav) is located at Ikkad on Thalassery Road, Kannur. This very ancient cave has a place in history. And in mythology. The name means Eichal Kav aged in Ur or Achi Kav aged in Ur.
It is also the place where Goddess Kali (Parvati) got lotus color from Brahma by praying on one leg for more than hundred years to change her black color. Thus Kali (black in color) changed to Gauri in lotus color. And those who blessed that Goddess Brahma will be worshiped as the Goddess of this Ur. Parvati dared to do this because Shiva had once made fun of the goddess's color. In this temple, Parasurama later enshrined Vishnu and Shiva's deity and the son of the hunter. Thus this Kav became the Shiva-Vaishnava-Shakti center. It was here that Urpachassi God was sedated by the heroic bravery of Theiyat, a son of Vetta. Thondachan God is sitting on the melekottam here. It is here that Shiva, Vishnu, Guru and Vaidyaan are united in one form. This god is also known as Kshetrapalan.
