പാണന്‍മാര്‍ തുളുവത്തി മാതു എന്ന തീയ്യ സ്ത്രീയെ അനുസ്മരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന തെയ്യമാണ്‌ പുലിച്ചാമുണ്ടി. ഈ തെയ്യം കോപ്പാളരും കെട്ടിയാടാറുണ്ട്.ഗര്‍ഭിണിയായ മാതു അരുവന്‍ചാലില്‍ നീരാടാന്‍ പോകുമ്പോള്‍ വഴിയില്‍ കുറുവക്കാട്ടില്‍ താളിയോടിക്കവേ ഒരു പുലി അവളെ കടിച്ചു കൊന്നു. നാലങ്ങിളമാര്‍ക്ക് കൂടിയുള്ള ഒരേയൊരു പെങ്ങള്‍ ചിതയില്‍ വെന്തെരിയുന്നത് കണ്ട ആങ്ങിളമാര്‍ കുലദൈവത്തെ വിളിച്ചു പ്രാര്‍ഥിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ കളരി ദേവത മാതുവിനെ ദൈവക്കോലമാക്കി. അങ്ങിനെ അവള്‍ പുലിച്ചാമുണ്ടി എന്ന പേരില്‍ ആരാധ്യ ദേവതയായി.
ഈ തെയ്യം പിലിച്ചാമുണ്ഡി തെയ്യം എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.

Pulichamundi is a theiya that Panans tie in commemoration of a Theiya woman named Thuluvatti Mathu. This day is also celebrated by the Kopals. When Matu, who was pregnant, was going to bathe in the stream, a tiger bit her and killed her while she was cutting palm trees on the way. When the Angilamars saw the only daughter of the Nalangilamars lying on the pyre, they called the clan god and prayed to the goddess Kalari, who made Matu the god's pillar. Thus she became a worshipable deity by the name Pulichamundi.
