തീയരുടെയും നായരുടെയും ആരാധ്യ ദേവതയാണ് “പുതിയോതി” എന്ന പുതിയ ഭഗവതിയെന്ന “പുതിയോത്ര”. ഹോമകുണ്ടത്തില് പൊടിച്ചു വന്ന ഈ ദേവത മലയരികെ കൂടെയാണത്രെ കോലത്ത് നാട്ടിലേക്ക് വന്നത്. അങ്ങിനെ കടലരികെകൂടി വന്നു വസൂരി വാരി വിതച്ച ശ്രീ കുറുമ്പയുടെ വസൂരിയൊക്കെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കിയത് മലയരികെ വന്ന ഈ ദേവിയാണത്രേ.
PUTHIYA BHAGAVATHI - PATARKULANGARA BHAGAVATHI
"Puthiyotra" aka New Bhagavati is the worshiped deity of fire and Nair. This goddess, who was crushed in Homakunda, came to the land of Kolat with her by the mountain. It was this goddess who came to the mountain and removed all the smallpox of Shri Kurumba who came to the sea and sowed smallpox.
The new Bhagavathy is the Veerashaurya Rana deity who killed Kartha Veerasura who killed her six brothers and burnt her to death. The new Bhagavathiyatra is Bhadra, who cut a Brahmin who went to worship Thaliparambathappan at Patarkulangara and drank his blood, and the fearsome one who slaughtered up to three people in Kotikkulam. The goddess, who felt invincible to her, killed Mulacheri Kurup and set her son-in-law on fire. This goddess is considered among the village deities. There are many Bhagavatis as the clan goddess of the clans and the mother goddess of the entire village and one of them is the new Bhagavati. Other Bhagavatis are known as Muchilot Bhagavathy, Kannangat Bhagavathy, Kakkara Bhagavathy, Konginichal Bhagavathy, Thotungara Bhagavathy, Ankakulangara Bhagavathy and others.
There are also Bhagavatis with the name of the village added as Bhagavatis who rule the town of the respective village. Parameswara took 40 days of homam to cure the boil. From the Homa kunda (Fire pit) burst a golden dust. That is the concept of “New Bhagavathy”. When the new Bhagwati asked Parameshwara why he had scourged her like this, he replied that it was to remove her boils and smallpox. For that, the new Bhagwati wants to quench my thirst first.
Thus the thirst of the goddess is quenched by giving chicken and kuruti. Then Devi removed the scurvy from Sri Mahadeva's face and the small pox from his forehead. Then Parameswara requested the Goddess to go to the earth in order to get rid of smallpox due to the chirumbas spreading on the earth and according to that the Goddess went to the earth with a sword, chilam and kanaka powder in her hand and cured the disease of the smallpox patients and saved them.
But in the meantime, Kartha Veeryasura, who wanted to possess the goddess, killed all the six Angilas sent by Parameswara to help the goddess. The enraged goddess killed the asura and burned him in the fire and touched the tilak with its coals. Still, when his anger did not subside, he set fire to the fort of Vilvapuram. He traveled (from the south) towards the north and arrived at Moolacheri temple, which is the goddess magical temple. Moolacheri Kurup gave a pedestal and position to the goddess. Later, as Kolathiri Mannan Devi appeared in a dream, the king tied the Devi in the form of a koala.
This is how the new Bhagwati blesses the people, "May good come to the thread, the family, the roof and the house.. May the good come."
Another Legend:
Puthyoti was a beautiful Atiyala female flag. The chief looked at her. When she did not yield to his wishes, the chieftain falsely tried her for adultery and slaughtered her and threw her into a well. That very night, her ghost appeared as the new Bhagwati and started harassing Pramani. It is said that the ghost told Pramani to make arrangements to tie Bhagwati's teyam as a solution for the crime committed and that is how the teyam is tied year after year.
There is not a single village in the land of Kolam that does not worship the Natu Para Devata (village goddess) New Bhagwati. Look at the saying of this fire goddess “No matter how much I burn myself, I am always new”.
