THEKKAN KARIYATHAN THEKKAN KARUMAKAN & KAIKKOLAN തെക്കന്‍ കരിയാത്തനും തെക്കന്‍ കരുമകനും, കൈക്കോലനും
കരിയാത്തന് എന്നാല്‍ പരമശിവനാണ്. കരിയാത്തന് തെക്കന്‍ ചാത്തു എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. എങ്കിലും തെക്കന്‍ കരിയാത്തന് എന്ന പേരിലാണ് പ്രസിദ്ധം. ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ കൂടെ “കൈക്കോലന്‍” എന്ന തെയ്യവും കൂടി കെട്ടിയാടിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
ഇവരെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഐതിഹ്യം ഇങ്ങിനെയാണ്‌: പാലാര്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ പട നായരും പാലക്കുന്നത്ത് കേളെന്ദ്ര നായരും മല പൊലിച്ച് നായാടാനും കറ്റല്‍ പൊലിച്ച് മീന്‍ പിടിക്കാനും പുറപ്പെട്ടുവത്രേ. നായാട്ടില്‍ ഒന്നും തടയാത്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ ക്ഷീണിച്ചവശരായ ഇവര്‍ വെള്ളം കുടിക്കാനായി കരിങ്കുലക്കണ്ടത്തക്കമ്മയുടെ വീട്ടിലെത്തുകയും അവര്‍ അവരെ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാന്‍ നിര്‍ബന്ധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. കുളിക്കാനായി കരിഞ്ചിലാടന്‍ ചിറയിലെത്തിയ അവര്‍ ചിറയില്‍ അത്ഭുത രൂപത്തിലുള്ള മീനുകളെ കാണുകയും എന്നാല്‍ അവ അവര്‍ക്ക് പിടിക്കൊടുക്കാതെ നീങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു. വീട്ടിലെത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ വീട്ടിലെ കിണറിലും ഇവയെ തന്നെ കണ്ടെത്തിയതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ കദളിപ്പഴം വെള്ളിപ്പാളയിലിട്ടു കിണറിലേക്ക് താഴ്ത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ അവ തങ്ങളുടെ രൂപം ചെറുതാക്കി പാളയില്‍ കയറുകയും ഇവയെ കറിവെക്കാനായി മുറിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോഴേക്കും അവയുടെ തനി രൂപം അവ കാണിച്ചു കൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ അറിയാതെ ചെയ്ത തെറ്റിന് മാപ്പിരക്കുകയും പ്രായശ്ചിത്തം ചെയ്യുവാനും തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ഈ രണ്ടു മീനുകളില്‍ ഒന്ന് ശിവ ചൈതന്യവും മറ്റൊന്ന് വിഷ്ണു ചൈതന്യവും ഉള്ളതായിരുന്നു.
അത് പ്രകാരം അന്ന് തൊട്ടു ഏഴാം ദിവസം മതിലകത്തെ കരിങ്കല്‍ പടിക്കിരുപുറവും രണ്ടു പൊന്മക്കള്‍ പിറന്നുവെങ്കില്‍ അവരെ വളര്‍ത്തി പയറ്റ് വിദ്യ പഠിപ്പിക്കുമെന്നും അവരോളം വണ്ണത്തില്‍ പൊന്‍ രൂപമുണ്ടാക്കി കുഞ്ഞിമംഗലത്ത് കൊട്ടയില്‍ കൊണ്ടോപ്പിക്കാമെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു. അത് പ്രകാരം ഏഴാം നാള്‍ കരിങ്കല്‍ പടിക്കിരുപുറവും പൊടിച്ചുണ്ടായ പൊന്മക്കളാണ് തെക്കന്‍ കൊമപ്പനും തെക്കന്‍ ചാത്തുവും. യഥാകാലം ഇവര്‍ വിദ്യകളെല്ലാം പഠിച്ചു ചുരിക കെട്ടി ചേകോനാകേണ്ട പ്രായമായപ്പോള്‍ പാണ്ടി പെരുമാളില്‍ നിന്നും ചുരിക വാങ്ങി ആചാരപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള്‍ തെക്കന്‍ ചാത്തു ‘തെക്കന്‍ കരിയാത്തന്’ എന്നും തെക്കന്‍ കോമപ്പന്‍ ‘തെക്കന്‍ കരുമകനെന്നും’ ആചാരപ്പേര്‍ ലഭിച്ചു.
ഇവര്‍ പിന്നീട് വലിയൊരു പനമുറിച്ചു വില്ലുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കുകയും ഇവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ പല അത്ഭുതങ്ങളും സംഭവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മദ്യം കൊടുക്കാതിരുന്ന ചന്തന്‍ തണ്ടാനും തിരുനെല്ലൂര്‍ തണ്ടാത്തിക്കും ഭ്രാന്ത് നല്‍കിയ ഇവര്‍ പിന്നീട് അവരെ സല്ക്കരിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ മാത്രമേ ഭ്രാന്ത് മാറ്റിയുള്ളൂ. വഴിയില്‍ വെച്ച് അവരെ പരിഹസിച്ച ഒരു കുട്ടിയുടെ കൈ മുറിച്ചു കളയാനും കരിയാത്തന് മടിയുണ്ടായില്ല. കുട്ടി കരഞ്ഞു മാപ്പപേക്ഷിച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്നാണ്‌ കൈ തിരികെ ലഭിച്ചത്. കുട്ടി പിന്നീട് ഇവരുടെ സേവകനായി മാറി. കരിയാത്തന് തെയ്യത്തോടോപ്പം കെട്ടിയാടിക്കുന്ന “കൈക്കോലന്‍ തെയ്യം” ആ കൈ പോയ കുട്ടിയുടെ സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തില്‍ ഉള്ളതാണ്. വളരെ ലളിതമായ വേഷമാണ് ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെത്. ശരീരത്തില്‍ വെള്ള കളറും മുഖത്ത് മഞ്ഞകളറുമാണ് ചമയം. കൊഴുപറ്റം എന്ന ചെറിയ ഒരു തലമുടിയും ഈ തെയ്യത്തിനുണ്ട്.
കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ ബ്ലാത്തൂര്‍ താഴെപ്പള്ളിയത്ത് കോട്ടത്തും, കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിലെ തിക്കൊടി പഞ്ചായത്തിലെ പുറക്കാട് ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ അരിമ്പൂര്‍ ശ്രീ കരിയാത്തന് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും ഇവരാണ് പ്രധാന ഉപാസന മൂര്‍ത്തികള്‍.
നാവു തീയര്‍ എന്നും വളഞ്ചിയര്‍ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന നാതിയന്‍, നാദ്യന്‍, വിളക്കിത്തല നായര്‍ എന്നിങ്ങനെ ദേശഭേദമനുസരിച്ച് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നവരുടെ കുലത്തൊഴില്‍ സവര്‍ണ്ണര്‍ക്കുള്ള ക്ഷൌര വൃത്തിയാണ്. ഇവരുടെ കുല ദൈവങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ് തെക്കന്‍ കരിയാത്തന്. കണ്ണപുരം, കണ്ടക്കൈ, കുണ്ടയം കൊവ്വല്‍, പരിയാരം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില്‍ ഇവര്‍ക്ക് തെയ്യക്കാവുകളുണ്ട്. തെയ്യം ഇവരെ ‘അറുവര്‍ കാരണോന്മാരേ’ എന്നാണു വിളിക്കുക. എന്നാല്‍ അവര്‍ണ്ണരായ തീയര്‍ക്ക് പൌരോഹിത്യവും ക്ഷൌരവൃത്തിയും ചെയ്യുന്ന കാവുതീയരും സവര്‍ണ്ണര്‍ക്ക് മാത്രം ഇത് ചെയ്തു കൊടുക്കുന്ന നാവു തീയരും ഒരേ സമുദായമല്ല. ‘ക്ടാരന്മാരുടെ’ കൂടി കുല ദൈവമാണ് തെക്കന്‍ കരിയാത്തന്.

Kariyathan means Lord Shiva.
Kariyathan is also known as Southern Chathu. However, it is famous as Southern Kariyatan. Along with this theiyam, "Kaikolan" theiyam is also tied.
The legend about them is as follows: Pata Nair and Kelendra Nair were kept in the Palar house and went out to hunt the mountain and go fishing in the sea.
After nothing stopped the dog, they were tired and reached the house of Karinkulakandattakamma to drink water and she forced them to eat. When they reached Karinchiladan Chira to bathe, they saw fishes of miraculous shape in Chira, but they did not catch them and moved away. When he came home, he found them in the well of the house, and when he lowered the fruit into the well in a silver pan, they shrunk and climbed on the pan. One of these two fishes was of Shiva Chaitanya and the other of Vishnu Chaitanya.
According to that, on the seventh day, if two golden cubs were born on the stone stairs of Mitilakam, they would be brought up and taught Payat Vidya, and they could be made into gold coins and put them in a basket at Kunjimangalam. According to it, on the 7th day, the southern Komappan and the southern Chathu are the golden stones that were crushed by the granite stairs. In due course, they learned all the techniques and when they were old enough to tie churika, they bought churika from Pandi Perumal and when they were ritualized, they got the traditional name of southern Chathu as 'Tekan Kariyathan' and southern Komapan as 'Tekan Karumakan'.
They then cut a large palm and made bows and many miracles happened in their lives. They drove Chanthan Thanda and Thirunelloor Thandathi crazy who did not give them alcohol, but they only changed their madness when they entertained them later. Cariathan did not hesitate to cut off the hand of a child who mocked them on the way. The hand was returned after the child cried and begged for forgiveness. The boy later became their servant. "Kaikolan Theiyam" where Kariyathan fights with Theiyam is based on the concept of the child who lost his arm. This costume is very simple. Grooming is white on the body and yellow on the face. This Theiya also has a short head of hair called kozhupatam.
These are the main upasana murthys at Blathur Nathappalliyat Kotta in Kannur district and Arimbur Sri Kariyathan Temple in Purakkad village of Tikodi panchayat in Kozhikode district.
The clan occupation of the Nathians, Nadyans and Vilakhitala Nairs, known as Nau Thiers and Valanchiars, is barbering for upper castes. One of their clan gods is Southern Kariyathan. They have theiyakavs in Kannapuram, Kandakai, Kundayam Kovval and Pariaram. Theyam will call them 'Aruvar Carononare'. But Kavuthiyas, who perform priestly duties and barbering for Avarna Theis, and Nau Theis, who do this only for the upper castes, are not the same community. Southern Caryathan is also the clan god of the 'Ktarans'.
