ഉത്തര മലബാറിലെ കാവുകളിലും സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ നരസിംഹാവതാരമാണ് ‘പരദേവത’ എന്ന് കൂടി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ‘വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തി’. ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം ‘പാലന്തായി കണ്ണന്’ എന്ന നീലേശ്വരത്തെ കുറുവാടന്‍ കുറുപ്പിന്റെ വേലക്കാരനുമായി ബന്ധപ്പട്ട് കിടക്കുന്നു. കുറുപ്പിന്റെ പശുക്കളെ മേക്കുന്നവനായിരുന്നു കണ്ണന് എന്ന കാലിയാനായ തീയ ചെറുക്കന്‍. പാലന്തായി കണ്ണന്റെ പേരിലും ഇവിടെ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടാറുണ്ട്. വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തി ചാമുണ്ഡി എന്നും ഒറ്റക്കോലം എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. കാസര്‍ഗോഡ്‌ ജില്ലയില്‍ നീലേശ്വരത്തിനടുത്താണ് വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തിയുടെ ആരൂഡമായ കോട്ടപ്പുറം. തീയര്‍ക്ക് പുറമേ സകല സമുദായങ്ങളും ഈ തെയ്യത്തെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു.
ഒരിക്കല്‍ പറമ്പിലെ മാവിന്‍ കൊമ്പില്‍ നിന്നും മാങ്ങ പറിച്ചു തിന്നുകയായിരുന്ന കണ്ണന്റെ കയ്യില്‍ നിന്നും മാങ്ങയുടെ അണ്ടി അത് വഴി പോയ കുറുപ്പിന്റെ അനന്തിരവളുടെ മാറില്‍ വീഴാനായി. കുപിതയായ അവള്‍ അമ്മാവനോട് പരാതി പറയുകയും കോപിച്ച കുറുപ്പ് കണ്ണനെ കൊല്ലുമെന്ന് പാട്ടകൊട്ടി വിളംബരം ചെയ്തു. ഇതറിഞ്ഞ കണ്ണന് നാടുവിട്ട് മംഗലാപുരത്ത് എത്തി അവിടെയുള്ള വൃദ്ധയും കൃഷണ ഭക്തയുമായ ഒരു തുളു സ്ത്രീയെ കാണുകയും അവിടെ അഭയം പ്രാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവര്‍ കണ്ണന് പുരാണ കഥകള്‍ (വിഷ്ണുവിന്റെയും കൃഷ്ണന്റെയും)പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുക്കുകയും ക്രമേണ അവന്‍ കൃഷ്ണ ഭക്തനാവുകയും ചെയ്തു. പന്ത്രണ്ടു വര്‍ഷം അവിടെ ചിലവഴിച്ച കണ്ണന് ഒരു ദിവസം സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷമായ പരദേവത അവനോടു തന്റെ ചുരികയുമെടുത്ത് നാട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങി പോവാനാവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
ഉണര്‍ന്നു നോക്കിയ കണ്ണന് ചുരിക വിറച്ചു തുള്ളുന്നത് കണ്ട് അതുമായി യാത്ര പുറപ്പെട്ട അവനു ആ വീട്ടിലെ അമ്മ ഒരു കന്നികുടയും ചുരികയും നല്‍കി. നീലേശ്വരത്ത് തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ കണ്ണന് തന്റെ ബാല്യകാല സഖാവായ കനത്താടന്മണിയാണിയുടെ വീട്ടിലെത്തി. അവിടെ നിന്ന് ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചശേഷം കൈകഴുകാനായി താമരകുളത്തിലെക്കിറങ്ങിയ കണ്ണനെ കുറുപ്പ് ഉറുമി കൊണ്ട് തലയറുത്തു. താമരക്കുളം ചോരക്കുളമായി മാറി. വീട്ടില്‍ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ കുറുപ്പിന് സര്‍വത്ര അനര്‍ത്ഥങ്ങളാണ് കാണാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞത്. നാടു നീളെ പകര്‍ച്ച വ്യാധി പടര്‍ന്നു. കന്നുകാലികള്‍ ചത്തൊടുങ്ങി. പരിഹാരമായി പരദേവതയെയും കണ്ണനെയും തെയ്യങ്ങളായി കെട്ടിയാടിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ മൂല സ്ഥാനം മംഗലാപുരത്തെ ജെപ്പ് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തുള്ള കോയില്‍കടിപാടി എന്ന തറവാടാണ്. നീലേശ്വരത്തെ കോട്ടപ്പുറം വൈകുണ്ഠക്ഷേത്രം മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന സ്ഥലമാണ്. അങ്ങിനെയാണ് വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തി തെയ്യം ഉണ്ടായതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ഈ കഥയിലെ കുറുപ്പിനെ ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവായും കണ്ണനെ പ്രഹ്ലാദനായും ചിലര്‍ സങ്കല്‍പ്പിച്ചു വരുന്നുണ്ട്.
ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ മുഖത്തെഴുത്ത്‌ വളരെയധികം സൌന്ദര്യമുള്ളതാണ്. തന്റെ മടിയില്‍ വെച്ച് ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിന്റെ മാറ് പിളര്‍ന്ന്‍ ചോര കുടിക്കുന്ന നരസിംഹ മൂര്ത്തിയുടെ രൌദ്ര ഭാവമാണ് വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തി തെയ്യത്തിലൂടെ ആവിഷ്ക്കരിക്കുന്നത് ഒപ്പം പ്രഹ്ലാദനെ ആശിര്‍വാദിക്കുന്നതും. തന്റെ ഭക്തനായ പാലന്തായി കണ്ണന്റെ ചുരികപുറത്തേറി ഈ ദേവന്‍ നീലേശ്വരം കോട്ടപുറത്തേക്ക് എഴുന്നെള്ളിഎന്നും അവിടെ തെയ്യക്കോലം കെട്ടി ആരാധിച്ചുവെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. മിക്കവാറും കാവുകളില്‍ പ്രധാന ദേവന്‍ / ദേവി ആരായാലും അവിടെ ഉപദേവനായി വിഷ്ണു മൂര്‍ത്തിയെ വലതു വശത്ത് കാണാം.
കൂട്ടത്തിനും കുറിക്കും അങ്കത്തിനും നായാട്ടിനും നരിവിളിക്കും തുണയായി എത്തുന്ന സാക്ഷാല്‍ നരഹരി ഭഗവാന്‍ നാരായണന്‍ തന്നെയാണ് പ്രധാന നാട്ടുപരദേവതയായ ഈ തെയ്യം.
സാധാരണയായി മലയരാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌. എങ്കിലും പുലയരും ഈ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടാറുണ്ട്. ആദ്യമായി വിഷ്ണുമൂർത്തി തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയത് പാലായി പെരെപ്പേൻ എന്ന മലയനാണ് എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ഒരുക്കം ഇങ്ങിനെയാണ്‌: കണ്ണില്‍ മഷി എഴുതും, മഞ്ഞള്‍പൊടി മുഖത്ത് പുരട്ടും, തലയില്‍ വെള്ളകെട്ടും. തല തൊട്ട് നിതംബം വരെ കിടക്കാവുന്ന ചുവന്ന പട്ടുണ്ടാവും. അതിന് മുകളില്‍ തലപ്പാളി വെച്ച് മുകളില്‍ കാട്ടു ചെത്തിപൂവ് കൊണ്ട് തലതണ്ട കെട്ടും. രണ്ടു കൈത്തണ്ടയിലും മുരിക്കില്‍ തീര്‍ത്ത മിനുക്കും മുത്തുകളും പതിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള വളകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാവും. കാലില്‍ ചിലമ്പും കാണും.

തീച്ചാമുണ്ടി അഥവാ ഒറ്റക്കോലം:
മലയസമുദായക്കാര്‍ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന ഈ തെയ്യം ഒറ്റക്കോലം എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അഗ്നിയിലെക്ക് എടുത്ത് ചാടുന്ന ഈ തെയ്യം നരസിംഹമൂര്ത്തിയുടെ എല്ലാ രൌദ്ര ഭാവങ്ങളും നമുക്ക് കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നുണ്ട്. തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ വാമൊഴി കേട്ടു നോക്കൂ:
“ഇന്ധനം മലപോല്‍ കത്തിജ്വലിപ്പിച്ചതില്‍ നിര്‍ത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടെന്‍
ഭക്തനാം പ്രഹ്ലാദനെ ദുഷ്ടനാം ഹിരണ്യകശിപു
അഗ്നിയില്‍ കുരുത്ത വൃക്ഷമാണല്ലോ വിഷ്ണുമൂര്‍ത്തി
അതിനു തിരുവാട്ടകേട് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നതായോരപരാധത്തിനു
ഇടവരുത്തരുതല്ലോ.. ആയതൊന്നു ഞാന്‍ പരീക്ഷിക്കട്ടെ..”
തീച്ചാമുണ്ടിയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു നിരവധി ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു കേള്‍ക്കുന്നു. ഹിരണ്യ വധം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും നരസിംഹമൂര്ത്തിയുടെ കോപം ശമിക്കാത്തതിനാല്‍ മഹാദേവന്‍ തന്റെ തൃക്കണ്ണ്‍ തുറന്ന്‍ അഗ്നിയുണ്ടാക്കിയെന്നും അതില്‍ ചാടി നരസിംഹം തന്റെ ദേഷ്യം ശമിപ്പിച്ചുവെന്നാണ് ഇതില്‍ ഒരു കഥ. മറ്റൊന്ന് ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിനെ കൊന്ന് പ്രഹ്ലാദനെ രക്ഷിച്ച നരസിംഹ മൂര്‍ത്തിയെയാണ് തീച്ചാമുണ്ടിയായി കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌ എന്നതാണ്.
നാരായണ നാമം ജപിച്ച പ്രഹ്ലാദനെ കൊല്ലാന്‍ ഹിരണ്യകശിപു പുത്രനെ അഗ്നിയില്‍ എറിഞ്ഞെന്നും തന്റെ ഭക്തനെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ മഹാവിഷ്ണു അഗ്നിയിലെക്ക് ചാടിയതാണ് എന്നും അതാണ്‌ തീ ചാമുണ്ടിയിലൂടെ കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നതെന്നും ഒരു കഥ. എന്നാല്‍ ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിനെ കൊന്ന ശേഷം ഭഗവാന്‍ നാരായണന്‍ അഗ്നി ശുദ്ധി വരുത്തിയതാണ് തീചാമുണ്ടിയിലൂടെ കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നതെന്നും ഒരു കഥയുണ്ട്. ഇങ്ങിനെ നിരവധി കഥകള്‍ തീചാമുണ്ടിയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഉണ്ട്.

'Vishnumurthy', also known as 'Paradevata', is the Narasimhavatara of Lord Vishnu, who hangs in the caves and places of North Malabar.
The history of this Theiyam is related to 'Palantai Kannan', a servant of Kuruvadan Kurup of Nileswaram. Kannan, a small fire boy, was tending Kurup's cows. Theyyam is also tied here in the name of Palantai Kannan. Vishnumurthy is known as Chamundi and Ottakolam. Kottapuram, the shrine of Vishnumurthy, is near Nileswaram in Kasaragod district. All communities worship this Theiya apart from Theiya.
Once, when Kannan was eating a mango from a branch in the field, the mango pod fell on the breast of Kurup's niece who was passing by.
Enraged, she complained to her uncle and the enraged Kurup announced that Pattakotti would kill Kannan. On hearing this, Kannan left the country and came to Mangalore where he met an old Tulu woman who was a devotee of Krishna and took refuge there. They told Kannan Puranic stories (of Vishnu and Krishna) and gradually he became a devotee of Krishna. After Kannan spent twelve years there, one day Paradevata appeared in a dream and asked him to take his Churika and return home.
Kannan, who woke up and saw the Churica trembling, set off with it, and the mother of the house gave him an umbrella and a Churica. On his return to Nileswaram, Kannan went to the house of his childhood friend, Haradadanmanani. After eating there, Kannan, who went down to the lotus pond to wash his hands, raised his head with a short smile. The lotus pond turned into a pool of blood. When Kurup returned home, he could see all the misfortunes. The epidemic spread throughout the country. Livestock died. As a solution, Paradevata and Kannan were tied up as Theiyas. The origin of this Theiyam is Koilkatipadi, an ancestral home in Jepp, Mangalore. Kottapuram Vaikuntha Temple at Nileswaram is another important place. I believe that this is how Vishnumurthy Theyam came about. Some have imagined Kurup as Hiranyakashipu and Kannan as Prahlada in this story.
The handwriting of this Theiyat is very beautiful. Narasimha Murthy, who drinks the blood from Hiranyakashipu's split breast on his lap, is portrayed by Vishnu Murthy through Theiya and blesses Prahlada. It is said that this deity ascended to Nileswaram Kottapura after his devotee Palantai Kannan's Churikapura and worshiped there by building a Theiyakolam. In most kavs, whoever is the main deity/goddess, Vishnu murti is seen on the right side as the sub-deity.
This Theiyam, the main local deity, is actually Narahari Lord Narayana, who comes to help herds, dogs, animals, wild animals and jackals.
This theyam is usually tied by the Malays. However, Pulayar also uses this method. It is believed that the Vishnumurti Theyam was first woven by a Malayan named Palai Perepane. The preparation of this Theiyam is as follows: ink will be written on the eyes, turmeric powder will be applied on the face, and white will be tied on the head. There will be red silk that can be laid from the head to the buttocks. A turban is placed on top of it and the scalp is tied with a wild cheethi flower. On both the wrists there are bangles studded with pearls and pearls. You will also see chilblains on your feet.

Thichamundi or Ottakolam:
This theyam is also known as Ottakolam, which is made by the Malayan community. This Theyam Narasimhamurthy, who jumps into the fire, shows us all the fierce aspects of Narasimhamurthy. There are many legends related to Thechamundi. There is a story in this that Narasimhamurthy's anger did not subside even after Hiranya's death, so Lord Mahadev opened fire with his trident and Narasimha jumped into it to appease his anger. Another is that Narasimha Murthy, who killed Hiranyakashipu and saved Prahlad, is tied up as a firecracker.
A story is that Hiranyakashipu threw his son into the fire to kill Prahlad who chanted the name of Narayana and Lord Vishnu jumped into the fire to save his devotee and that is what is shown through the fire chamundi. But there is also a story that after killing Hiranyakasipu, Lord Narayana was purified by fire through Thechamundi. There are many such stories about Thichamundi.
